Kara steps up as anti-alien feeling grips national City

supergirl’s going to Be more earth-bound, literally and figuratively, in season four, as executive producers Jessica Queller and robert rovner look to real evils for Kara Danvers to overcome this year. “we’re going to get back to more grounded storytelling than we did last year when we were battling world-killers,” rovner says. “thematically, it’s about what’s stronger: fear or hope? our show has always told stories that reflect back on what’s happening in society. in Supergirl, they’re facing some of the same divisions that we’re facing in the world today. so each of our characters will be facing them in their own way, and hopefully at the end seeing hope is indeed stronger than fear.”

“there will be a rising anti-alien sentiment in national City, and that will be a challenge for supergirl,” Queller reveals. “she is all hope, and inspiring hope. so how do you combat fear when the very thing that people are afraid of, you embody? one of the ways that she will be able to combat that is as Kara Danvers, the reporter. we’ve often told stories about the duality between Kara and supergirl, so we are excited that we’ll see Kara, the journalist as hero. As we all know, the freedom of the press is more important than ever, and she’s going to use that as a superpower.”

And there will be the addition of nia nal (aka Dreamer) to the story played by trans actress, nicole Maines. of the casting, rovner enthuses, “the show is all about inclusion and representation. to have a trans character and a trans actor represented as a superhero is something we’re proud to be able to do. nicole Maines is a wonderful actress and a real-life superhero.”
