HOPE FROM STEPS OUT OF THE SHADOWS
JULIE PLEC, THE PROLIFIC CO-CREATOR OF THE VAMPIRE
Diaries universe on TV, is back with a new series based around
The Originals character hope Mikaelson. Played again by Danielle Rose Russell, now 17-year-old hope is sent to boarding school at The Salvatore School for the young and gifted in Mystic falls. giving context for the spin-off, Plec tells
SFX,“The Originals was a show about a family dynasty over millennia. To be able to say this is the next generation of that family is so cool. And Mystic falls has had centuries of vampire history, and now it’s a new generation coming back into this town that’s basically had its history re-written.
“hope, despite having a super-chaotic, damaged and dysfunctional family, was also deeply loved. So, one of the transitions of being a student at this school is that she’s made the decision to self-isolate. She goes out of her way to piss people off, which is awesome. She’s a little aloof so people think she’s stuck up, but it’s a protective measure.”
how hope integrates into the new world serves as the backbone of the show. “it’s about kids with supernatural powers who are different from other people, and who are just trying to get through the day without imploding,” says Plec. “with that comes all the great roots of romance, best friends and school, and the local kids who go out of their way to torture these kids.”
