I deplore those who sit back and proclaim ‘Entertain me!’

-

QUIT YOUR MOANING! Les Prince, email I see that the nonsense about the ending of Game Of Thrones continues. I deplore those who sit back and proclaim “entertain me!” and I have even less respect for those who shout “I wasn’t entertained – entertain me better!” I have my own ideas about how GOT should have ended, but I was actually pleasantly surprised by the way the showrunners did end the saga. We like our favourite characters to triumph, for good to win and evil to be utterly defeated, but a good ending will be more subtle, and the GOT ending provided a nice twist. on the whole I think they did a magnificent job, especially after the source material ran out. Thank you Benioff and Weiss for producing such a magnificent show over such a long period, with consistently high production values, fabulous acting and gripping story arcs. I will not be signing that petition.

A SATISFYING ENDING

James Kinsley, email I’ve yawned and bitched my way through Bran’s episodes like everyone else. He’s nobody’s favourite character, surely? But after eight seasons of tested loyalties, plots, intrigues and betrayal, the Lords of Westeros choosing a king who’s never had anyone pick up a banner or march on an enemy in his name is the perfect way to bring peace. And supported by a Small Council of everyone’s favourites, the six kingdoms are in safe hands. Meanwhile Jon, Sansa and Arya all get their hearts’ desires, and to put behind them once and for all the things that have broken them. Who’s not satisfied by that as an ending? Sam’s A Song Of Ice And Fire book bit was cringeworthy though…

FITTING FINALE

Robert Graham, email So the Game Of Thrones series finale didn’t go as I expected, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad TV as a lot of moaning fans are saying. on the contrary, I thought it was a fitting ending if you’d been paying attention from the beginning, with the series having twists and turns and shocks throughout. Who would’ve cheered on Jamie Lannister at the start of the series? or Theon Greyjoy when he first appears? or the Hound? The best fantasy TV series ever made. SFX A neat ending that satisfies everyone or something that’s going to keep the internet alight for years to come? We know which one most showrunners would prefer.

DOOM LIFTS THE GLOOM Mike Garner, email Doom Patrol is an acting tour de force and a stupidly, weirdly brilliant show. every actor goes whole-heartedly at the weird and wonderful. Alan Tudyk’s meta fourth wall-breaking monologues and rants are just the right amount of nuts. Brendan Fraser sets a new standard for TV swearing. However, Diane Guerrero deserves award after award for her portrayal of so many characters. GOT fans might want to give this a watch. SFX Now we want to see Brendan Fraser take on Malcolm Tucker in a TV swear-off…

NAME THAT FILM... Phil armstrong, email I’ve been stuck trying to remember a film I watched in the ’80s. It was about these people staying in a house and the family started to eat the guest for dinner and serve him to their friends without them knowing. It was called something like Guess Who/ What’s On The Menu? or Guess Who’s/What’s For Dinner? I’ve tried searching for it but am hitting a wall. SFX Resident horror fiend Ian reckons this might be Bob Balaban’s blacker-thanblack comedy Parents from 1989. Any equally tasty suggestions, anyone?
