Captain’s Log

There’s often talk in the office – when we used to go into offices, that is – of unusually terrifying moments in film history. Not ones that deliberately set out to scare or disgust, but ones that had a far longer-lasting impact than perhaps initially intended. An example of those, for me, are the scenes in Flash Gordon with the Wood Beast in the tree stump. I’ve been wary of sticking my appendages into strange holes ever since! Flash Gordon is one of those films that’s just always been there in my life and has always been a delight to lose myself in, and it’s a crying shame that there was never a sequel. So, ahead of the 40th anniversary – I know, I know, how can it possibly be 40 years already? – and a super-duper deluxe re-release of a beautifully remastered version of the film, we caught up with the cast and crew to celebrate a sci-fi classic as only SFX can. Relocating to Mongo sounds like a good idea right now, what with everything going on. Everyone at SFX has, thankfully, had the magazine to keep us busy (and safe!) at home. Looking at what’s coming up in the next few issues of SFX, we’ll be struggling to fit everything in – seriously, things are very exciting. And we could all do with a little excitement, albeit not from sticking your hand in a strange tree stump… Stay safe!
