What would you do if there was a zombie in your shed? The entrepreneurial Parks come up with a few ideas in this Korean rom-zom-com; it helps that the undead addition to their family isn’t quite your average zombie.
Ageing patriarch Man-duk (Park In-hwan) discovers first-hand that there’s an upside to the unfortunate Jjong-bi’s (Jung Ga-ram) bite, and his sons Jun-gul (Jung Jae-young) and Min-gul (Kim Nam-gil) waste no time figuring out a way to profit. But their sister Hye-gul (Lee Soo-kyung) has more romantic plans for the more-attractive-than-you’dthink dead boy…
Beautifully shot and acted, Zombie For Sale finds maybe the last ever new take on zombie lore. The physical comedy of Jung’s performance is the highlight of the first half’s cartoonish mayhem, which is tempered with some appropriately biting social satire; the second half does stray a little closer to cliché as the zombie count multiplies, but its energy never falters. And the punchline is a killer.
Extras A 13-minute screening Q&A with director Lee Min-Jae; a 20-minute video essay on Korean social satires by critic Pierce Conran; a four-minute Making Of; two behind-the scenes clips (two minutes total); an audio commentary by Arrow Video podcasters Sam Ashurst and Dan Martin. Plus: trailer; booklet. Sarah Dobbs
