ABBY ENDINGS

Julie Graham looks back at playing lead character Abby Grant

-

What sticks in your mind about making Survivors?

The camaraderie of it – we became a little family. Also, it was challenging in terms of the filming. We couldn’t have any noise at all because there was meant to be nobody left in the world. I have very fond memories of it. I was absolutely gutted when it finished. It took us all a long time to get over, it was just so shocking.

It’s a shame we never got to see Abby in mother mode…

There was so much more to explore, not just in terms of storyline, but also the personal character developments. I think that was one of the disappointing aspects. I mean, poor Abby: she spends all that time looking for her son and then the show’s cancelled!

Adrian Hodges told us that Greg, Abby and Peter would have become a de facto family in that third series.

That’s the way it was heading. I loved the slow burn of Abby and Greg’s relationship – they had a real mutual respect for each other. So that was disappointing not to develop that more. And I loved working with Paterson Joseph; we just adored each other!

Have you revisited the series since it was on?

I haven’t watched it for a long time, but my children watched it recently and really loved it. I do email Adrian now and again and say, “Come on, let’s bring it back! Let’s see what’s happened to them!” Of course, it would probably be impossible to get everyone back together now…

Where do you think Abby would be, 10 years on?

I’d like to think she’d still be with Greg and that they’d broaden the family, a bit like a Walking Dead kind of thing. Also I wanted to explore much more of the government conspiracy, those unanswered questions.
