LETITIA “LETI” LEWIS (JURNEE SMOLLETT)

“She definitely started out very glamorous, and she had this evolution because of where the series goes and because of all the action. That’s how she operates in the world and how she moves through the world; that’s her armour, being glamorous. I loved the dress that we made her for the party. I built a dress that would follow and move, and respond to all her movements. She also wears an equestrian outfit [in episode two], and that was one of my favourites. That’s a good example of a piece based on that time period, but not necessarily true to that time period and that fabric. It has the spirit of that time, but they are not necessarily pieces that really would’ve existed then.”

ATTICUS FREEMAN (JONATHAN MAJORS)

“This is a guy that shows up with a duffel bag. So, what could he have in that duffel bag? He’s been in the army, so he’s gonna have pieces of his uniform. He’s got boots. He’s got a couple of pairs of jeans. He’s got a couple of T-shirts. So this is not a guy that has a closet, like Leti would. Then I found a vintage T-shirt that was this sea foam colour. When I saw that T-shirt, to me, his whole closet was built around it. He wore it in the pilot, and everything was built around it, because his body is so beautiful. You want to be able to see that, and that T-shirt facilitated seeing his form. Jonathan was so comfortable in that time, and dressing that period was so right on his body.”
