COURTNEY B VANCE GEORGE FREEMAN IS
How would you describe Lovecraft Country?
I honestly don’t know how to describe the show. It is beyond description. This is a world we haven’t seen before. The audience is not going to know where to look or where to turn. Kudos to [showrunner] Misha Green and her team for getting us to this place. As Bette Davis once said, “Fasten your seatbelt, it’s going to be a bumpy night!”
How challenging was the role of George Freeman?
I had it easy. For Jurnee and Jonathan, this piece was monumentally difficult. This is a big CGI action flick. It’s a Game Of Thrones piece and they are involved in a lot of the action. They had to go to places that they probably hadn’t been before. I don’t know if they would want to go there again – unless a second season happens, I guess.
What do you think of Jordan Peele’s work in this genre?
What Jordan Peele did with Get Out and his subsequent films was tell a great story with lots of scares – and folks love to be scared. They love to jump and scream in horror. I love the fact that Jordan has stepped into this arena and brought some colour to it. I’m really excited about that. I’m really excited about him.
How much are you a fan of the horror genre?
I’m not a horror film aficionado by any means. I am a scaredy-cat. Jaws ruined the beach and the ocean for me, but I feel like there’s more to horror than monsters and sharks. Fatal Attraction was a horror story for me. The Silence Of The Lambs was a horror. It’s all about the storytelling. If you tell a good story, people will come and watch it. And this is a great story.
