SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL

Tom Ellis talks Lucifer

-

How is Lucifer adjusting to being back in Hell?

It’s a different experience for Lucifer in Hell this time. He’s lonely. He knows he did this for the greater good. Of course, time in Hell passes much slower than it does up on Earth. So, while it feels like six months on Earth, it’s been hundreds of years for Lucifer down in Hell. Not only is he bored, he’s a bit heartbroken – although he would never admit that. He’s a lost Lucifer. But he feels like, for the first time in his life, he’s doing something for the greater good. He’s doing something for other people, so he needs to stick to his guns and stay there.

What kind of ruler is Lucifer?

Lucifer always said he’s not the one who did the torturing. He was more of the commanding officer of the prison camp. He still likes to have fun with various people in their Hell loops. I think what we find is that Lucifer doesn’t get the same kick out of it that he used to. That’s where things start to differ for him.

What was it like shooting the ’40s film noir episode?

It was a lot of fun for everybody because it was so different to all the other episodes we’ve done. We all got to dress up in different costumes and revisit an era which was amazing. Being on the Warner Bros. lot and making it look like New York at nighttime was great. When I first imagined this, I thought it was going to be Lucifer in black and white. I didn’t think about the notion of what noir actually looks like, with the specific lighting and the things that go with it. We would watch it on the monitor and go, “Oh my god. I can’t believe this is us!” I can’t wait for our audience to see that one. It was a gift for us and hopefully will be a gift for the audience.

And we understand Lucifer gets to belt out a duet with Maze…

I did. Lesley-Ann [Brandt] did an amazing job. She plays her mum in the flashback. That’s what the episode is about. It’s a great episode, because it’s its own episode, but it also informs a lot of our story for later in the season. A lot of it has to do with Lucifer’s ring, which people are always asking me about.
