Memorable moment I have always been obsessed by lions. When I saw them in the wild for the first time I held back sobs, not from fear, but from wonderment.

Ute Junker spends at least half the year on the road, exploring the world’s wildernesses, luxurious lodgings, and its most fascinating cultures. “I love reading about other countries, but some things you can only learn on the ground: the conviviality of a coffee ceremony, the aura of ancient stones or just how complex navigating Istanbul addresses can be,” she says.

Memorable moment At Seal River Lodge in Manitoba, our walks through the sub-arctic tundra regularly took us close to wild polar bears. It was quite a sight.
