Best for: Old-world grandeur beside the river Reviewed by: Cathy Wagstaff
The Langham, Melbourne holds iconic status in the Victorian capital. Perhaps it’s the fact that it is the only five-star property in the CBD with terraces and balconies. Perhaps it’s the institution of Afternoon Tea with Wedgwood. Or perhaps it is simply that The Langham has distinguished itself on all levels with rose-coloured style.
The Langham exceeds my expectations from the moment I walk into the marble lobby, illuminated by crystal chandeliers and accentuated by a sweeping grand staircase. This is old-world grandeur without the stuffiness, finished with a bouquet of Langham Pink roses perfuming the air.
This sense of elegance and heritage continues in my room. The hotel features 375 rooms, 11 Club Spa Suites, The Apartment and the truly decadent
161sqm Presidential Suite. The use of colour is restrained, limited to accents in rich greens or reds, anchored with handcrafted wooden furniture.
As a guest staying in a Club Room, I make good use of complimentary access to the exclusive Club Lounge, perched at the top of the hotel on the 24th floor. In this refined oasis, I enjoy an impressive breakfast each morning, allday tea, coffee and pastries, traditional afternoon tea, finishing with pre-dinner cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Add in the complimentary Wi-Fi, and a Club Room is worth the upgrade.
Another signature are the hotel’s Service Stylists, internal concierges that organise my Chocolate Bar Afternoon Tea at Aria and a detoxifying foot masque treatment at the onsite Chuan Spa.
