UPRISINGS
Museo Universitario Arte de Contemporáneo, Mexico City. Until 29 July 2018.
The University Museum of Contemporary Art’s exhibition examining political struggle is disarmingly relevant. Covering grand movements and small, Sublevaciones (Uprisings) represents social unrest in 250 manuscripts, documents, paintings, drawings, photographs and films. It features work by Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp and Michel Foucault, alongside Emiliano Zapata (his Manifestos in Nahuatl) and Francisco Toledo (kites of the 43 disappeared Ayotzinapa students), tying this international project into the Mexican experience. Curator Georges Didi-Huberman, a philosopher and art historian, organised the exhibition with Paris’ Jeu de Paume. Rather than choosing a chronological path, Uprisings takes visitors through five areas: Elements, Gestures, Words, Conflicts and Desires.
