CARTIER: THE EXHIBITION
National Gallery of Australia, Canberra. 30 March – 22 July 2018.
The jeweller to kings and king of jewellers showcases more than 300 of its dazzling masterpieces in this historic exhibition at the NGA. The stories of 20th-century royalty, aristocrats and celebrities are told through the glittering pieces, including Dame Elizabeth Taylor’s platinum, gold and Burmese ruby necklace of 1951 and Her Majesty The Queen’s Halo tiara. From the garland style, exemplified by Dame Nellie Melba’s turn-of-the-century collection, to Art Deco, to fascinating innovation (María Félix’s 1975 Crocodile necklace is a stunning example), Cartier was and is at the forefront of design, rendering each movement in platinum, gold and precious gems.
