A vintage pattern from the Sirdar archives, re-imagined for today by Fran Morgan.

For dungarees Sirdar Snuggly 4ply (55% nylon, 45% acrylic, 50g/226m), Periwinkle (447) A 2.5mm (US B/1 or C/2) hook 4 buttons, 2cm/¾in (2 of these are false buttons on the Back) Stitch marker Elastic, 2cm (¾in) wide, half your waist measuremen­t 2m (2yds) of cotton webbing, 2cm (¾in) wide (optional) For watermelon motif Sirdar Snuggly 4 ply (55% nylon, 45% acrylic, 50g/226m), 1 ball of:

TENSION

For dungarees: 22 sts and 12 rows to measure 10x10cm (4x4in) over treble crochet using a 2.5mm hook or size needed to obtain stated tension

NOTES

The Shorts are made first, bottom up, in two identical pieces, and sewn tog along the Front and Back centre seam. Dc borders are added around the waist and leg openings. The Bib and Straps are made separately and sewn on afterwards. *The Front Rise measuremen­t is length of centre front seam from waist to crotch. It does not include depth of dc waistband. DUNGAREES

TO MAKE UP

Join centre Front, Back and inside Leg seams. With RS of work facing, work 10 rounds of dc around Waist. With WS of work facing, work 10 rounds of dc around each Leg, and turn back 5 rows to form a turn-up. Secure each end of elastic on inside of waistband above the side seam, so that it sits inside waistband around the Back. Attach yarn on WS of waistband near one end of elastic, and work a few ch sts, then ss to inside of waistband on other side of elastic so ch crosses the elastic to hold it in place. Cont ch and ss on alternate sides of elastic so that elastic is held in place by a ch zigzag.

BIB Ch60 ( 66: 72: 78: 84: 90).

Row 1 (RS) Tr in third ch from hook and in each ch to end, turn. [58 ( 64: 70: 76: 80: 86) sts] Row 2 Ch3 (counts as tr throughout), tr in each st to end, turn. Cont working in tr as Row 2 until piece meas 23 ( 24: 25: 26: 27: 28) cm. Fasten off.

BORDER AND BUTTONHOLE­S

Rejoin yarn at bottom of Bib with RS facing to work a border around top 3 edges.

Row 1 (RS) Ch1 (does not count as st throughout), dc evenly in row ends up to top corner, dc in corner and in first 2 sts of top row, ch2, skip 2 sts (buttonhole made), dc in each st to last 3 sts, ch2, skip 2 sts (buttonhole made), dc in last st, dc in corner and dc evenly down row ends on other side, turn.

Row 2 Ch1, dc in each st and ch around, working 3dc in each corner st at the top corners, turn.

Row 3 Ch1, dc in each st around, working 3dc in each corner st. Fasten off.

STRAP !MAKE 2"

Ch11.

Row 1 Dc in second ch from hook and in each ch to end, turn. [10 sts]

Row 2 Ch1 (does not count as st throughout), dc in each st to end, turn. Cont working in dc until Strap meas 72cm or length required. Make the Straps longer than you think you will need, and sew them in position once you have fitted them. You can undo them slightly if necessary, as long as you sew buttons to foundation ch end of strap. You may wish to sew lengths of cotton webbing to WS of straps to stop them stretching.

TO MAKE UP

Sew bottom of Bib to inside top front of waistband, positionin­g it centrally. Sew a button to one end of each strap, and sew the other ends of each strap inside the waistband, crossing them as shown in image. Sew false buttons on waistband where straps meet if you wish. WATERMELON MOTIF Using Yarn A, make a magic loop.
