Beachcombe­r bunting

Kate Eastwood's subtly striped bunting is embellishe­d with embroidery and rustic ribbon. There's a helpful chart over on p94 to help you nail this project.

Noro Silk Garden Solo (45% silk, 45% mohair, 10% wool, 50g/100m), 1 ball of each: Yarn A Shade 1 Yarn B Shade 5 Yarn C Shade 31 Yarn D Shade 32 Yarn E Shade 40 These quantities made 7 flags Small amount of white 4ply yarn or embroidery thread A 3mm (US C/2 or D/3) hook 2m (2yds) of rope Tape/ribbon for decoration

18.5x18.5cm (7¼x7¼in)

NOTES

Each flag is made from bottom up, following the Chart. Extra pieces for Waves are made separately and sewn on afterwards. Detail is added with embroidery thread, and each flag is secured to the rope to make bunting.

FLAG !MAKE 7"

See Chart on p94. On the Chart, RS rows are read from right to left and WS rows from left to right. Read from bottom to top. The first section of pattern is written out below to help you follow the Chart: With Yarn B, ch2.

Row 1 (RS) 3dc in second ch from hook, turn. [3 sts]

Row 2 Ch1 (does not count as st throughout), dc in each st to end, turn.

Row 3 Ch1, 2dc in first st, dc in each st to last st, 2dc in last st, turn. [5 sts] Row 4 Ch1, dc in each st to end, turn.

Rows 5-8 Rep (Rows 3 and 4) twice more. [9 sts]

Row 9 Ch2 (beg turning ch does not count as st throughout), (tr, htr) in first st, dc in next st, ss in next st, dc in next st, htr in next st, tr in each of next 2 sts, htr in next st, (htr, tr) in last st, turn. [11 sts] Change to Yarn C. Rows 10-35 Cont working as shown on Chart, changing colour where indicated. Fasten off and weave in ends.

WAVES

For each flag we worked 3 wave ruffles of different lengths, that are sewn onto the flag using the image as a guide. Make some in Yarn C and some in Yarn D as desired.

SMALL WAVE "MAKE 2 PER FLAG#

Ch9.

Row 1 (RS) Ss in second ch from hook, (dc, htr) in next st, ss in each of next 2 sts, (dc, htr) in next st, ss in each of next 3 sts. Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing to the Flag.

LARGE WAVE "MAKE 1 PER FLAG#

Ch11.

Row 1 (RS) Starting in second ch from hook; *Ss in next st, (dc, htr, dc) in next st, ss in next st; rep from * twice more, ss in

each of next 2 sts. Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing to the Flag.

EDGING

Work a round of dc around the outside edge of the flag, with 3dc in the st at the point, matching the colours. Fasten off and weave in ends. Using a small amount of 4ply white yarn or embroidery thread, oversew a few sts along front edges of Waves. Sew 2-3 seagulls onto each Flag.

TO FINISH

Block flags to same size. Create a loop in each end of rope for hanging and sew the Flags evenly spaced between. Tie some small lengths of ribbon between each Flag.
