Granny patch blanket

Emma Wright's granny squares and mini grannies create a patchwork effect.

DY Choice Aran With Wool (75% acrylic, 25% wool, 100g/200m), 5 balls of Yarn A Light Grey (15) 1 ball of each: Yarn B Denim (13) Yarn C Rust (08) Yarn D Gold (25) Yarn E Raspberry (18) Yarn F Lime (24) A 5mm (US H/8) hook MEASUREMEN­TS Finished Blanket measures 98x98cm (38½x38½in) Each finished square measures 12x12cm (4¾x4¾in) Border measures 2cm (¾in) BLANKET LARGE SQUARE Make 32 squares using a combinatio­n of Yarns B- F for Rounds 1-3, changing colour each Round. Aim to use each colour approximat­ely the same number of times. Using a 5mm hook, ch4, ss to 4th ch from hook to join into a ring.

Round 1 (RS) Ch3 (counts as tr), 2tr into

ring, (ch2, 3tr into ring) 3 times, ch2, ss to top of beg ch-3 to join. Fasten off.

Round 2 (RS) Join Yarn in any ch-2 sp, ch3 (counts as tr), (2tr, ch2, 3tr, ch1) in same ch-2 sp, *(3tr, ch2, 3tr, ch1) in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * twice more, ss to top of beg ch-3 to join. Fasten off.

Round 3 (RS) Join Yarn in any ch-2 corner sp, ch3 (counts as tr), (2tr, ch2, 3tr, ch1) in same ch-2 sp, *3tr in next ch-1 sp, ch1, (3tr, ch2, 3tr, ch1) in next ch-2 corner sp; repeat from * twice more, 3tr in next ch-1 sp, ch1, ss to top of beg ch-3 to join. Fasten off.

Round 4 (RS) Join Yarn A in any ch-2 corner sp, ch3 (counts as tr), (2tr, ch2, 3tr, ch1) in same ch-2 sp, *(3tr in next ch-1 sp, ch1) twice, (3tr, ch2, 3tr, ch1) in next ch-2 corner sp; repeat from * twice more, (3tr in next ch-1 sp, ch1) twice, ss to top of beg ch-3 to join. Fasten off. PATCHWORK SQUARE Make 128 squares using Yarns B- F for Round 1 and Yarn A for Round 2. Using a 5mm hook, ch4, ss to 4th ch from hook to join into a ring.

Round 1 (RS) Ch3 (counts as tr), 2tr into ring, (ch2, 3tr into ring) 3 times, ch2, ss to top of beg ch-3 to join. Fasten off.

Round 2 (RS) Join Yarn A in any ch-2 sp, ch3 (counts as tr), (2tr, ch2, 3tr, ch1) in same ch-2 sp, *(3tr, ch2, 3tr, ch1) in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * twice more, ss to top of beg ch-3 to join. Fasten off. Group together 4 Patchwork Squares, each with a different colour centre and sew them together into a square using whip stitch (see p62) in the back loops only. Continue until you have 32 larger Patchwork Squares. TO FINISH Sew the squares together into Rows of 8 squares using whip stitch in the back loops only, alternatin­g Large Squares and Patchwork Squares. Sew the Rows together alternatin­g a Large Square and Patchwork Square as the first square, using the image as a guide.

BORDER

Round 1 With RS facing, join Yarn A in any corner, ch1 (does not count as st), dc evenly around all edges of the blanket, working 2dc in each corner, ss to first dc to join.

Round 2 Ch1 (does not count as st), dc in each dc around, working 2dc in each corner, ss to first dc to join. Fasten off.

Round 3 Join Yarn B in first st, ch1 (does not count as st), dc in same st, *dc in st below next st in Round 1, dc in next st; repeat from * around, working 2 sts in each corner, ss to first dc to join. Fasten off.
