Who: Jessica Carey What: Lady behind The Hook Nook

You should know: Jessica taught herself to crochet via YouTube videos in 2011. “My husband and I had our first child that year and I wanted to be able to make beanies and blankets for her,” she says. “We still have those first few blankets I made and it’s so fun to see not only how far I have come, but how much my daughter has grown since she first cuddled those gifts.”

Creating her own patterns was a natural step for the Oregon resident. “I’ve always preferred going a bit rogue when following patterns,” she says. “If a section of the pattern didn’t make sense to me, I would make it up as I went and hope for the best. Or I’d be inspired by something I saw and try to figure it out in crochet. Writing patterns for the past five years has not only shown me that with hard work, all things are possible, but it’s also driven me to new paths.”

Jessica is best known for her chunky textured accessories and stylish garments. “I have a big heart for fashion,” she says. “Designing and creating clothing really inspires me! I love how it’s so easy to express and motivate yourself with an outfit. Clothing can make you feel empowered.” She adds: “I work from home 99% of the time, but I still get dressed and do my makeup because it motivates me to be a boss. Life is what you make it, and clothing can help you achieve it.”
