MEASUREMENTS

Curtain measures approximately 150cm (60in) across with a drop of 260cm (102 in)

NOTES

The Curtain is made from Triangle Flags, which are sewn together to form the Main Panel. ‘Eyelet’ shapes are sewn to the bottom of each Flag, a Border is worked around the entire Main Panel, and extra rows are then added to the top of the Main Panel. The Upper Panel is made from squares sewn together and then bordered around the entire piece. The Upper Panel is sewn to the Main Panel. Beaded chains are attached to the bottom and the top piece is decorated with shisha mirrors.

The yarns are divided into two categories, ‘hot’ and ‘cool’. Hot colours include Hot Red, Shocking Pink, Fuchsia, and Royal Orange. Cool colours are Vivid Blue, Electric Blue, Emerald and Grass Green. Yellow Gold can be used in both. Catona yarn is used for the Curtain Panels, Cahlista for the Beaded chains and Maxi Sweet Treat for the Shisha Mirror Frames.

TRIANGLE FLAGS

Each Triangle Flag is made up of 2 Circle in Square Motifs sewn together. A triangle shape is worked in rows onto the bottom of the squares, then a border is worked around the whole Flag.

Start by making 2 Circle in Square Motifs for each Triangle Flag as follows in the pattern below. There are 13 Flags in total, so you will need 26 Circle in Square Motifs.

CIRCLE IN SQUARE MOTIF

There are 2 colourways for these motifs. A ‘Hot’ Motif is worked in four different colours, Catona Yarns A-D: Rounds 1 and 2 Yarn A Cool

Round 3 Yarn B Hot

Round 4 Yarn C Hot

Round 5 Yarn D Hot

For a ‘Cool’ Motif, reverse these colours (all Catona):

Rounds 1 and 2 Yarn A Hot

Round 3 Yarn B Cool

Round 4 Yarn C Cool

Round 5 Yarn D Cool

Make 12 Motifs in the Hot colourway and 14 in Cool.

With a 3.5mm hook and Yarn A, make a magic loop.

Round 1 (RS) Ch3 (counts as tr throughout), 11tr into loop, ss to top of beg ch-3. [12 sts]

Round 2 Ch3, tr in st at base of ch, 2tr in each rem st around, ss to top of beg ch-3, fasten off. [24 sts]

Join Yarn B in the space between any 2-tr groups. Work sts in spaces between sts of previous round.

Round 3 Ch3, tr in same sp, *(skip next 2 sts, 2htr in next sp) twice, skip 2 sts, (2tr, ch2, 2tr) in next sp; rep from * twice more, (skip 2 sts, 2htr in next sp) twice, skip 2 sts, 2tr in next sp, ch2, ss to top of beg ch-3, fasten off. [32 sts, 4 ch-2 sps]

Join Yarn C in a ch-2 corner space.

Round 4 Ch1 (does not count as st), 2dc in same sp, *(skip next st, dc in sp before next st) 7 times, (2dc, ch2, 2dc) in ch-2 corner sp; rep from * twice more, (skip next st, dc in sp before next st) 7 times, (2dc, ch2) in first ch-2 sp, ss to first dc, fasten off. [44 sts, 4 ch-2 sps] Join Yarn D in a ch-2 corner space.

Round 5 Ch1 (does not count as st), *3dc in corner sp, (skip next st, dc in sp before next st) 10 times; rep from * 3 more times, ss to first dc, fasten off. [12 sts along each side and 4 corner sts – a total of 52 sts]

TO MAKE UP

Join the Squares in pairs by placing them RS together and sewing through the outer loops only of each st across one side. Match 2 Cool Squares together to make 6 ‘Cool’ Flags. Match each of the remaining Cool Squares with a Hot Square to make 2 ‘Hot’ Flags. The remaining 10 Hot Squares will make 5 Hot Flags, so there will be a total of 7 Hot Flags and 6 Cool.

Yarn colours for the rest of each flag are 3 different Catona shades of either Hot colours for a Hot Flag or Cool colours for a Cool Flag: Triangle Rows 1-8 Yarn A

Border Round 1 Yarn B

Border Round 2 Yarn C

TRIANGLE

Take 2 joined Squares of a Flag and join an appropriate Yarn A with RS facing to the space before the bottom left corner stitch of one Square.

Row 1 (RS) Ch1 (does not count as st throughout), dc in same sp, dc in sp before each st, working across the bottom of the square to the next corner, with the last dc worked in the space after the corner st, turn. [15 sts]

Row 2 Ch1, skip first st, dc in each st to last 2 sts, dc2tog. [13 sts]

Rows 3-7 Repeat Row 2. [3 sts]

Row 8 Ch1, skip first st, dc2tog, fasten off and weave in ends.

BORDER

Join Yarn B in the top left corner st with RS facing.

Row 1 (RS) Ch1, dc in corner sts and side sts along one side of first Square [14 sts], dc in seam, 14dc in side of second square, 8dc down one side of triangle, (2dc, ch2, 2dc) in point of triangle, 8dc up other side of triangle, 29dc up side of Squares as before, fasten off leaving top of square unworked. [78 sts]

Row 2 (RS) Join Yarn C in first st of last Row, ch1, dc in each st of last row with (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in ch-2 sp at point, fasten off and

weave in ends. [82 sts]

Repeat the Triangle and Border for all Flags.

MAIN PANEL

Join the 13 Triangle Flags as you joined the Square Motifs by sewing through the outer loops. Alternate Hot and Cool Flags, starting and ending with a Hot Flag.

EYELET

Make 13, using a different shade of Catona for each and using the colours evenly.

Make a magic loop.

Round 1 Ch1 (does not count as st), 20dc into loop, ss to first st, fasten off. Pull tail to close loop leaving an eyelet of approximately 1.5cm. Use the yarn tails to sew each Eyelet to the point of Triangle Flag.

MAIN PANEL BORDER

With RS facing, join Catona Electric Blue to top right corner.

Round 1 Ch1 (does not count as st throughout), dc evenly across top of Panel, working (dc, ch2, dc) into corner st, dc down side of first Flag to Eyelet, *dc2tog in ch-2 sp and first st of Eyelet, (2dc in next st, 2dc) around Eyelet, dc2tog over last st of Eyelet and ch-2 sp, dc in each st to next Eyelet; rep from * until last Eyelet has been worked, dc up side of last Flag to first st, (dc, ch2) in same st as first st, ss to first dc.

Now work in rows across the top of the Main Panel only:

Row 2 Ch1, dc in ch-sp and in each st across, dc in ch-sp at corner, turn.

Rows 3-4 Ch1, dc in each st across, turn.

Fasten off.

Continue working in rows as Row 3, with one row of each Vivid Blue, Emerald, Vivid Blue and Electric Blue. Fasten off.

UPPER PANEL

SQUARE MOTIF MAKE 22

All squares are made in Hot shades of Catona yarn. Work as for the first 3 rounds of Circle in Square motif, using one shade (Yarn A) for Rounds 1 and 2, and another shade (Yarn B) for Round 3. Join squares in the same way as the Triangle Flags, in one long row.

UPPER PANEL BORDER

Join Catona Electric Blue in the bottom right corner ch-2 sp.

Round 1 (RS) Dc evenly around the Upper Panel, working (2dc, ch2, 2dc) in each corner ch-2 sp.

Round 2 Ch1, dc in same sp, dc evenly to next corner, (dc, ch2, dc) in ch-2 sp, dc evenly along the top of the banner, (dc, ch2, dc) in ch-2 sp, dc evenly down side, dc in ch-2 sp and fasten off, leaving the bottom unworked. Join the Upper Panel to the top of the Main Panel using Catona Electric Blue, in the same way you joined the Hot Square Motifs.

Row 1 Join Catona Electric Blue to the top right corner of the Upper Panel, ch1, dc in same sp, dc along the top evenly to next corner, dc in ch-2 sp, fasten off and weave in ends.

CURTAIN POLE TABS MAKE 22

Using any colour of Catona yarn, ch7.

Row 1 Dc in second ch from hook, dc across, turn. [6 sts]

Rows 2–11 Ch1, dc in each st across, turn.

Fasten off.

Position Upper Panel wrong side facing, place tabs evenly across the width of the Upper Panel, one behind each Hot Square. Sew the tabs into place.

You can block the Panel whilst you move on to make the Beaded Strings.

BEADED STRINGS

EYELET STRINGS MAKE 13

Using Cahlista yarn and a 6mm hook, work two different colours as one strand. Thread 8 macrame beads onto the two strands. *Ch24 and bring the first bead up to the hook, yrh (around the bead); repeat from * 7 times more, ch1 and fasten off. Sew one into place on each Eyelet on the Main Panel.

TRIANGLE STRINGS MAKE 12

Still using two different coloured strands as one, thread 8 macrame beads. Ch20, *bring bead up to the hook, yrh (around the bead), ch24; repeat from * to last bead, ch15, fasten off. Sew into position between each Triangle. Use the image for guidance.

LARGE MIRROR FRAME (MAKE 65)

Use any colour Maxi Sweet Treat Yarn and a 1.5mm hook, make a magic loop.

Round 1 Ch1, 24dc into loop, ss to first dc,

fasten off.

Pull tail to tighten stitches but leave a big enough space to view the mirror through.

Round 2 Join any new colour, ch1, (2dc in next st, dc in next 5 sts) 4 times, ss to first dc to join, fasten off. [28 sts]

Position Frame in place onto Main Panel, sew half way round in the same colour used in Round 2, slide mirror underneath the frame and finish sewing the frame to the Panel. Place mirrors on each Circle in Square Motif and at the bottom point of each Triangle Flag. We have also added mirrors on the seam, between the Triangle Flags.

SMALL MIRROR FRAME (MAKE 22)

Use any colour Maxi Sweet Treat Yarn and a 1.5mm hook, make a magic loop.

Round 1 Ch1, 24 htr into loop, ss to first st,

fasten off.

Pull tail to tighten the stitches but leave a big enough space to view the mirror. Position one Frame in each Hot Square along the Top Banner, then sew into place as you did the Large Mirror Frames.

TO FINISH

Weave in any ends that remain. Run a curtain pole through the tabs on the back and position the curtain in a window or doorway. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■
