This bold and funky frame by Bryony Hitchcock is the brightest of them all.

ABBREVIATI­ONS

FPdtr (Front post double treble) Yrh twice, insert hook around the post of the specified st, from front, round the back of the post and back to the front, yrh and pull through the loop, (yrh, draw through two loops) twice

NOTES

The crochet will stretch as it progresses, but blocking will bring it back to the correct dimensions.

As Round 5 has 8 sts more than Round 2, in each repeat, 2 of the FPdtr sts will sit next to each other on Round 2 to accommodat­e this. When joining new colour, always hold work with RS facing.

RAINBOW MIRROR FRAME

Using Yarn F, ch232, ss to first ch to join into a ring, being careful not to twist,

fasten off.

Round 1 (RS) Using Yarn E, join with ss to any ch, ch1 (does not count as st throughout) dc in each st around, ss to first dc to join, fasten off. [232 sts]

Round 2 Using Yarn D, join with ss to bl of any st, ch3 (counts as 1tr), trbl in same st, trbl in next 28 sts, (2trbl in next st, trbl in next 28 sts) 7 times, ss to top of beginning ch-3, fasten off. [240 sts]

Round 3 Using Yarn G, join with ss to space between any st, ch1, dc in space between every st around, ss to first dc, fasten off. [240 sts]

Round 4 Using Yarn C, join with ss to any st, ch1, 2dc in same st as ss, dc in next 29 sts, (2dc in next st, dc in next 29 sts) 7 times, ss to first dc. [248 sts]

Round 5 Using Yarn B, join with ss to any st of Round 4, ch1, *FPtr in next st of Round 2, (dc in next st of Round 4, skip next st of Round 2 and FPtr in next st of Round 2) 14 times, dc in next st of Round 4, FPtr in next st of Round 2 (noting that there is no skipped st between the last 2 FPtr); repeat from * another 7 times, ss to first FPtr, fasten off. Round 6 Using Yarn A, join with ss to top of any FPtr, ch1 (does not count as a st), dc in same FPtr, (ch3, skip next st, dc in next st) to end, ch3, ss to first dc.

[124 dc and 124 ch-3 sps].

Fasten off and weave in ends.

HANGING TASSELS MAKE 3

Using any combinatio­n of the Scheepjes Catona Maxi Sweet Treat yarn of your choosing, make each mirror holder and hanging ch in one colour, and its tassel in a contrast colour.

MIRROR HOLDER

Ch10, ss to first ch to join into a ring.

Round 1 (RS) Ch3 (counts as tr), 19tr into the ring, ss to top of beginning ch-3 to join,

fasten off. [20 sts]

Repeat to make another ring.

Join the 2 rings together with ss until more than halfway round. Insert 2 shisha mirrors, back to back, between the rings before continuing to join with ss.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

TASSEL

Make a tassel approx 8cm in length.

HANGING CHAIN

Ch15, attach to one side of shisha mirror with ss and dc back along the ch, fasten off. Ch15, pass the end of the ch through centre of tassel, ss to first ch to join into a ring, ch1, dc into the first 5 sts of the ch, ss to opposite side of shisha mirror holder from hanging chain, fasten off.

TO MAKE UP

Block rainbow mirror frame then use PVA glue to attach hanging chain of each tassel to WS of rainbow frame, approx 12 ch-3 loops apart. Once dry, use ‘hot’ glue to attach bobble trim directly to edges of mirror glass, with bobbles at inner edge, then attach rainbow frame, gluing in small sections. Go beyond classic bunting this summer by hooking up Emma Leith’s flags.

NOTES

All the colours work together, so there is no hard and fast rule for where to change colours. Some Flags have a different colour for every row and some use the same colour for several rows. The choice is yours to play with. Always change colour on the last yrh of the last treble of the current row and weave in all the ends as you go.

FLAG MAKES 10

Using chosen colour, ch22.

Row 1 (RS) Dc in second ch from hook, dc in each st to end, turn. [21 sts]

Row 2 Ch1 (does not count as st), dc in each st to end, turn.

Row 3 Ch1, htr in each st to end, turn.

Row 4 Ch4 (counts as tr, ch1), skip st at base of beg ch-4, skip next st, (tr in next st, ch1, skip next st) 9 times, tr in last st, turn.

[11 tr, 10 ch-1 sps]

Row 5 Ch1, dc in same st at base of ch-1, (dc in next ch-1 sp, dc in next st) to last ch-1 sp, dc in last ch-1 sp, dc in third of beg ch-4.

Row 6 As Row 3.

Row 7 As Row 2.

Row 8 Ch1, (dc in next st, spike htr in next st) to last st, dc in last st.

Row 9 As Row 2.

Row 10 As Row 3.

Rows 11-14 As Row 2.

Row 15 As Row 4.

Row 16 As Row 5.

Row 17 As Row 3.

Row 18 As Row 2.

Row 19 As Row 8.

Row 20 As Row 4.

Row 21 As Row 5.

Row 22 As Row 2.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Cut pompom bobble trim to fit width of Flag and sew to base of Flag along Row 2.

TO MAKE UP

Join Flags as follows:

Row 1 Using Shocking Pink, ch15 and join with a ss into first ch to form a hanging loop. Take first Flag and with RS facing, *dc in each st to next corner, ch3* and repeat from * to * with next Flag. Continue to join Flags in this way, until all 10 Flags are joined, work ch12 (to end with ch15 in total) and ss into 15th ch from hook to form second hanging loop.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Row 2 With RS facing, join Royal Orange to first st of ch and dc in each st across.

Fasten off and weave in ends.
