Give hanging plants space to branch out with Louisa Sheward’s macramé-style plant holder design, stitched in natural jute for a sturdy ride.

■ Hoooked (100% natural jute, 350g/45m),

2 balls of Grey Mist

■ A 15mm (US P/19) hook

■ A wooden pole or knitting needle

■ Beads for decoration

Plant Holder measures 17cm (6 in) diameter, 13cm (5in) high

Back piece measures 24cm (9 in) wide, 35cm (13 in) high

Reverse dc Working from left to right, insert hook into the next st to the right, yrh and pull though loop, yrh, pull through two loops on the hook

PLANT HOLDER

Make a magic loop.

Round 1 Ch3 (counts as first st throughout), 11tr into the loop, ss into beg ch-3 to join. [12 sts]

Round 2 Ch2, dc into same st, 2dc in each st around, ss into beg ch-2 to join. [24 sts]

Round 3 (Working in bl only) ch3, tr in each st around, ss into beg ch3 to join, turn. [24 sts]

Round 4 (RS) Ch3, tr in next 5 sts, FPtr around each of the next 4 sts, tr in each of the next 2 sts, FPtr around each of the next 4 sts, tr in next 8 sts, ss into beg ch-3 to join.

Round 5 Ch3, tr in each of the next 5 sts, *skip next 2 sts, dtr in next 2 FPtr, dtr in first skipped FPtr, dtr in second skipped FPtr, tr into next 2 unworked sts; repeat from * once more, tr into next 6 sts, ss into beg ch-3 to join.

Round 6 Ch2, dc in next 5 sts, FPtr around each of the next 4 sts, dc in each of the next 2 sts, FPtr around each of the next 4 sts, dc in each of the next 8 sts, ss into beg ch-2 to join, fasten off. [24 sts]

BACK PIECE

With the back of the plant holder facing you, attach the yarn to the 2nd dc after the second set of FPtr. Row 1 (WS) Ch3, BPtr around next 4 sts, tr in next 2 sts, BPtr around next 4 sts, tr into the next st, turn. [12 sts]

Row 2 Ch3, *skip first 2 sts, dtr in next 2 sts, dtr in first skipped BPtr, dtr in second skipped BPtr, tr in each of next 2 unworked sts; repeat from * once more omitting last tr, turn. [12 sts]

Row 3-6 Repeat Rows 1 and 2.

Row 7 Repeat Row 1.

Row 8 Ch2, dc into next 11 sts, do not turn. [12 dc]

Row 9 (Working from left to right) ch1, reverse dc into all sts across.

Fasten off.

TO FINISH

Cut a 60cm piece of yarn and thread decorative beads onto it. Attach to the top of each end of Row 9 to make a handle. Insert the pole through the back of the reverse dc row and weave in ends.
