TROPICAL TOTE

Pop along to the shops with Kate Bruning’s useful tropical tote in tow.

Once you’ve hooked up this on-trend tote, you’ll be heading to the shops just to show it off. Kate’s rich foliage really pops off the pink background. Jungle chic, baby.

NOTES

The Tote is made up of a front and back Panel, and two Handles. There are 5 Leaf Motifs sewn to the Front Panel of the Tote.

TOTE PANELS MAKE 2

Make 1 Panel in Forest and 1 in Peony Pink. Using Forest, ch68.

Row 1 Dc in the second ch from hook, *tr in next ch, dc in next ch; repeat from * across, turn. [67 sts]

Row 2 Ch1, (tr in next st, dc in next st) 33 times, tr in last st, turn.

Row 3 Ch1, (dc in next st, tr in next st) 33 times, dc in last st, turn.

Rows 4-76 Repeat Rows 2-3, do not turn at the end of the final row.

EDGE

Round 1 Ch2, dc into the last st of Row 76, dc into each row end, (dc, ch2, dc) into the corner, dc evenly across bottom edge of Tote, (dc, ch1, dc) into next corner, dc into each row end. Fasten off.

Repeat the instructio­ns for the Tote Panel and Edging using Peony Pink.

HANDLES MAKE 2

Using Forest, ch100.

Row 1 Dc in the second ch from hook, (tr in next ch, dc in next ch) repeated across, turn. [99 sts]

Row 2 Ch1, (tr in dc, dc in tr) repeated across, ending with a tr, turn.

Row 3 Ch1, (dc in tr, tr in dc) repeated across, ending with a dc, turn.

Rows 4-7 Repeat Rows 2-3. Fasten off.

Sew the end of 1 Handle to the first Tote Panel, 5cm from the edge. Sew the other end of the Handle 5cm from the opposite edge on the same Tote Panel. Use image as a guide. Sew the second Handle to the other Tote Panel in the same way.

STANDARD LEAF MAKE 3

Make 1 in Forest and 2 in Green Beryl. Using Forest, ch18.

Round 1 4dtr in the fourth ch from hook (the unworked chs will act as a ch-sp), dtr in next 9 ch, tr in next 4 ch, (tr, ch1, tr, ch1, tr) in last ch, working along opposite side of ch, tr in next 4 sts, dtr in next 9 sts, 4dtr in last st, ch4, ss into base of last st. [26 dtr, 11 tr]

Round 2 Ch1, (3dc, ch4, 2dtr) in the first ch-sp from Round 1, FPdtr in next 12 sts, FPtr in next 5 sts, skip 1 st, 2dc into ch-1 sp, skip 1 st, ch1, 2dc in next ch-1 sp, skip 1 st, FPtr in next 5 sts, FPdtr in next 12 sts, (2dtr, ch4, 3dc) in last ch-4 sp, ss back into the first dc. [10dc, 4dtr, 24fpdtr, 10fptr]

Round 3 Ch1, dc in first st, htr in next 2 sts, 4tr in ch-4 sp, FPdtr in next st, 2dtr in next st, FPdtr in next 11 sts, FPtr in next 6 sts, skip 2 sts, (dc, htr, dc) in ch-1 sp, skip 2 sts, FPdtr in next 6 sts, FPdtr in next 11 sts, 2dtr in next st, FPdtr in next st, 4tr in ch-4 sp, htr in next 2 sts, dc in next st, ss back into the first dc.

[4 dc, 5 htr, 8 tr, 26 FPdtr, 4 dtr, 12 FPtr] Ch64 to create a long stem. Fasten off without closing off the last ch as you may prefer to adjust stem length when you attach it to the Tote.

Repeat the instructio­ns for the Standard Leaf twice more using Green Beryl.

ALTERNATIV­E LEAF MAKE 2

Make 1 in Green Beryl and 1 in Amazon. Using Green Beryl, repeat Rounds 1-2 of the Standard Leaf.

TO FINISH

ATTACH LEAVES

Position the Leaves onto the Peony Pink Tote Panel using the image as a guide. Ensure that the stems fall behind all of the Leaves. When you’re happy, tie off the stems. Sew the Leaves into place, stitching around the edges of the Leaves and along the stem.

JOIN PANELS

Place both Panels together, WS together, and join Peony Pink into the top left corner. Working through the sts on both Panels: Round 1 Ch1, *dc in each st to the corner, (dc, ch2, dc) into corner; repeat from * once more, dc in each st to top right corner. Fasten off.
