Simply Crochet

Wilma Westenberg is a full-time crochet blogger living in the Netherlands. “My love of crochet started in December 2014 when my grandma sent me a picture of her cute little crocheted Christmas trees. I felt the urgent need to learn how to make them as well. With my mother’s crochet hook and no experience whatsoever I started making Christmas trees.

“My biggest triumph so far is probably the 3D blanket I made with my mom. We both have a different tension so it took quite some trial and error to figure out how to achieve the same-sized diamonds. We worked for almost two years on this blanket (with other projects in between).

“Sometimes I get my inspiration from people or events in my life, like the special series of free crochet patterns I’m working on now, which is dedicated to people with the same benign tumour as me. I try to make projects based on their personalities, clothing style or hobbies. Another example is one of my WIPS which is based on my dad’s work (hint: it involves cheese). Some projects are based on holidays, like Valentine’s Day when I automatically end up working with hearts and pink/red colours.

“For my future crochet challenges, I would like to keep working on my special series. I don’t think there will be an end to this project as I find new people with the same condition almost once every month. Thanks to this project I can share my story with the world through yarn and crochet.

“My crafty confession is that I have more yarn than I can handle… and keep buying more when I see new pretty yarn!”
