Where do i start?
Start by making a foundation level of squares
For our practise piece, we’ll make squares made up with 5 sts and 5 rows. The first foundation level can be any number of squares, but we’ll make two.
Start with a foundation chain. For each square, ch1 for each stitch and row, plus 1 extra. So for each of our 5x5 squares, we’ll chain 11 (5 + 5 + 1), plus we need to add 1 chain at the very end. This is a multiple of 11 + 1. If you were making 4x4 squares, you’d need a multiple of 9 + 1; for 6x6 squares, you’d need a multiple of 13 + 1, and so on.
Step 1 To start a practise piece, ch23. To start the Forward Pass, insert hook in second chain from hook (you can insert into either the chain front or the back bump), yrh, pull up a loop, leaving it on the hook (2 loops).
Step 2 Repeat this process to pull up a loop in the next ch until you have 6 loops on the hook. The first loop forms the square’s edge, the other 5 are your sts. Pull up a loop in the next chain to give you a 7th loop. This final loop is key to the technique – we’ll explain more shortly.
Step 3 For an Entrelac Return Pass, you don’t need the usual ‘ch1’. Instead, *yrh and pull through 2 loops; repeat from * until one loop remains. The first row is finished.
Step 4 For the next Forward Pass, pull up a loop in each vertical bar below until you have 6 loops. To get the 7th and final loop, pull up a loop in the next unused chain.
Step 5 Work the Entrelac Return Pass as you did in Step 3.
Step 6 Repeat Steps 4-5 until you have 5 rows in total.
