ABBREVIATIONS
sdc (split double crochet) Work a standard dc st, but working between the legs of the st below instead of into the top of the st For a full list, see page 92
At the height of the festive season a bottle is an appropriate gift, but if you feel it lacks the personal touch this holder is the answer.
NOTES
Bottle Holder is worked from the bottom up. A second Base is worked at the end and joined to the bottom of the Holder to reinforce it. Pattern is worked in a continuous spiral, without closing off each round with a ss. You may find it helpful to mark the first st of each round, moving the marker up a you work. The pattern uses the tapestry crochet method for colourwork. Carry unused yarn throughout the Sides section even if yarn is not being used in the round, as this will give an even finish. Work sts around the carried yarn to enclose it. Change colour on the final yrh of st before colour change is indicated.
There is a Chart below, which you should refer to for all colour changes. Each small square represents 1sdc. Read all rounds from right to left.
BOTTLE HOLDER
BASE
Using Red Wine, ch2.
Round 1 (RS) 6dc into second ch from hook. [6 dc]
Round 2 (RS) 2dc in each st around. [12 dc]
Round 3 (2dc in next st, dc in next st) 6 times. [18 dc]
Round 4 Dc in next st, (2dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts) 5 times, 2dc in next st, dc in next st. [24 dc]
Round 5 (2dc in next st, dc in next 3 sts) 6 times. [30 dc]
Round 6 Dc in next 2 sts, (2dc in next st, dc in next 4 sts) 5 times, 2dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts. [36 dc]
Round 7 (2dc in next st, dc in next 5 sts) 6 times. [42 dc]
Do not fasten off.
SIDE
Continue with Red Wine, and carry Vanilla Cream (see Notes).
Round 1 Sdc in bl of each st around.
Round 2 *(Change to Vanilla Cream, sdc in next st, change to Red Wine, sdc in next st) twice, sdc in next 17 sts; rep from * once more.
Round 3 *Sdc in first st, change to Vanilla Cream, dc in next st, change to Red Wine, dc in next 19 sts; rep from * once more.
Follow the Chart to the right for all colour changes. Work the 21 sts of the Chart twice for each round.
Rounds 4-38 Sdc in each st around.
Round 39 As Round 3.
Rounds 40-43 Repeat Rounds 2-3.
Round 44 *Change to Vanilla Cream, sdc in first st, change to Red Wine, sdc in next st, change to Vanilla Cream, sdc in next st, change to Red
Wine, (ch1, skip 1 st, sdc in next 3 sts) 4 times, ch1, skip 1 st, sdc in next st; rep from * once more.
Round 45 As Round 3.
Rounds 46-48 Repeat Rounds 2-3, then repeat Round 2 once more.
Round 49 Using Red Wine, sdc in each st around.
Fasten off.
SECOND BASE
Using Red Wine, ch2.
Rounds 1-7 As Rounds 1-7 of Base. [42 dc] Work the next round through the unused fl from final round of Base and through both loops of last round to join.
Round 8 (Ch1, ss) in each st around.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
DRAWSTRING
Using Red Wine and Vanilla Cream held together as one strand, ch75.
Fasten off.
Thread Drawstring through the ch-sps created over Round 44 of Bottle Holder and weave in all ends.
