4 balls of Yarn A Munich (079) 1 ball of Yarn B Istanbul (037)

■ A 4mm (US G/6) hook

■ A 3.5mm (US E/4) hook

■ A 2.75mm (US C/2) hook

Shawl measures 180x148x81­cm (70 x58 x32in) after blocking

ABBREVIATI­ONS

htr-hump Work st indicated into the extra loop that sits on the WS of the htr st in previous row; this loop will be facing you as you are working in turned rows

spike dc Insert hook st indicated two rows below, yrh and pull loop up to height of current round, yrh and pull through 2 loops on hook

picot Ch4, ss to last ch from hook For a full list, see page 94

Move over milk and cookies; take a hike tea and cake! We think the grey stripes and yellow bobbles on this shawl are the perfect pairings.

NOTES

Shawl is worked in increasing rows, beginning at the corner of the narrow end. Fabric will naturally curl in towards RS as you are working; however, this is resolved once the edging is worked and the Shawl is blocked.

Using a 4mm hook and Yarn A, ch3.

Row 1 (RS) Htr in third ch from hook (skipped ch counts as htr), turn. [2 sts]

Row 2 (WS) Ch1 (does not count as st throughout), dc in htr-hump of each st across, turn. [2 dc]

Row 3 Ch1, 2htr in first st, htr each st across, turn. [3 sts]

Row 4 Ch1, dc in htr-hump of each st across, turn.

Rows 5-112 Repeat Rows 3-4. [57 sts]

Row 113 As Row 3. [58 sts]

Row 114 Ch1, dc in bl of each st across, turn.

Row 115 As Row 3. [59 sts]

Row 116 As Row 4.

Rows 117-160 Repeat Rows 113-116 another 11 times. [81 sts]

Row 161 Ch1, 2tr in first st, tr in each st across, turn. [82 sts]

EDGING

Change to a 3.5mm hook.

Round 1 Ch1, *(1dc in each dc row-end, 2dc in each htr or tr row-end, skip all Yarn B rowends)** across to point of Shawl, (2dc, picot, 2dc) in corner; rep from * to ** across next side of Shawl, 3dc in first st of Row 232, dc in each st to final st, 2dc in final st, ss to beg dc to join. Change to 2.75mm hook.

Round 2 (Ss, ch1) in each st to picot, (ss, ch1) twice into picot, (ss, ch1) in each rem st around.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

TO FINISH

For best results place shawl in a ‘delicates’ laundry bag and machine wash on a gentle setting at 30°C. Lay flat to dry and steam block.
