filet fantastic

Dainty detailing makes a big impact in Pat Strong’s let summer top

-

Here is the perfect top to keep you stylish and cool this summer – delicate diamonds dominate the lower half, while the wide sleeves will provide comfort on a hot day.

NOTES

Top is worked in rows back and forth. The Upper Section of the Top (the sleeves and yoke section combined) is constructed in two pieces, each from the sleeve cuff to the midline, then joined at the midline with an exposed seam. The Filet Section is worked in one piece, seamed at the left side, then sewn on to the Upper Section. The neckband is finished with a reverse double crochet stitch. When working with a large number of foundation ch, work more than you think are required and undo any extra later to guard against miscounting. For the Filet Section pattern, it may be helpful to place a stitch marker after each repeat of 9 filet squares/27 sts to keep track of each motif repeat.

FILET CHART NOTES

Follow the Filet Chart on the page opposite. Read all RS rows from right to left, and WS rows from left to right.

The ch3 at the beginning of every row counts as a tr and is not shown on the Filet Chart. Work the 27-st repeat from the Filet Chart the stated number of times for each size. Work the last tr of every row into the third ch of the beg ch-3 from the previous row. Each row on the Filet Chart corresponds to each row of the written pattern. On the Chart, each empty square counts as (ch2, skip 2 sts, tr in next st), and each filled square counts as (tr in next 3 sts). The first 3 rows of the pattern are written in full to guide you.

NECKBAND

Round 1 (RS) With RS facing and starting at the shoulder, rejoin yarn and work in dc evenly around neck edge for an even number of sts, join with ss to first dc, turn.

In the following round, right-handed crocheters should work from left to right, and left-handed crocheters from right to left.

Round 2 Working in the opposite direction, (ch1, skip 1 st, dc in next st) around, ss to first st, Fasten off and weave in all ends.

TO FINISH

Block the pieces by pinning out flat, dampening and leaving to dry flat. Blocking the Filet Section is particularly important. Please refer to manufacturer’s instructions for full care of the yarn.

Sew sleeve seams, joining row-ends from cuff edge to markers. Join row-ends of Filet Section (this will be the left side seam of the garment) and seam the top edge of the Filet Section to the Upper Section, between the sleeve seams.
