■ Cascade Heritage Solids 4ply (75% wool, 25%

nylon, 100g/400m), 2 balls of Placid Blue (5713)

■ A 4mm (US G/6) hook

■ Plastic milk bottle cap, 4cm

■ Sheet of plastic, 20x10cm (eg plastic milk

bottle)

TENSION

20 sts and 13 rounds to measure 10x10cm (4x4in) over half treble crochet using a 4mm hook, or size needed to obtain correct tension

To fit head circumfere­nce of 54-57cm (21 -22 in)

ABBREVIATI­ONS

htr2tog *Yrh, insert hook into next st, yrh and pull up a loop; rep from * once more, yrh and pull through all loops on hook

NOTES

The body of the Hat is worked in rows and then joined and gathered at the top to create the shape. The Button Top and Peak are made separately and joined to the Hat at the end. The Button Top is worked in a continuous spiral without closing off each round with a ss. You may find it helpful to mark the first st of the round, moving the marker up as you work.

Row 1 (RS) Ss in second ch from hook, ss in next 7 ch, dc in next 8 ch, htr in next 18 ch, turn. [34 sts]

Row 2 (WS) (Working in fl only) Ch1 (does not count as a st throughout), htr in first 18 sts, dc in next 8 sts, ss in final 8 sts, turn.

Row 3 (Working in bl only) Ch1, ss in first 8 sts, dc in next 8 sts, htr in final 18 sts, turn.

Rows 4-89 Repeat Rows 2-3.

Row 90 As Row 2.

With WS facing, whipstitch Row 90 to the base of the foundation chain to join.

Fasten off leaving a long tail.

Thread tail through row-ends around the open edge on the ss side. Pull tight to gather the fabric and close the top of the Hat, then secure with a few sts.

RIB

Turn so RS is facing out.

Join yarn into any row-end around open end of Hat.

Round 1 (RS) Ch1, htr in each row-end around, ss to beg htr. [90 sts]

Round 2 (RS) Ch1, htr in bl of each st around, ss to beg htr, turn.

Round 3 (WS) (Working in bl only) Ch1, (htr in next 7 sts, htr2tog) 10 times, ss to beg htr, turn. [80 sts]

Round 4 (Working in bl only) Ch1, (htr in next 6 sts, htr2tog) 10 times, ss to beg htr, turn. [70 sts]

Round 5 (Working in bl only) Ch1, (htr in next 5 sts, htr2tog) 10 times, ss to beg htr, turn. [60 sts]

Fasten off leaving a 30cm tail.

Thread tail through sts of final round and pull tight to gather the top. Secure with a few small sts.

BUTTON TOP

Make a magic loop.

Round 1 (RS) Ch1, 5dc into loop. [5 sts]

Round 2 2dc in each st around. [10 sts]

Round 3 (2dc in next st, dc in next st) 5 times. [15 sts]

Round 4 (2dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts)

5 times. [20 sts]

Round 5 Dc in bl of each st around.

Round 6 Dc in each st around.

Fasten off leaving a 20cm tail.

Place the bottle top inside and sew into place at the top of the Hat.

PEAK MAKE 2

Ch31.

Row 1 (RS) Dc in second ch from hook and each ch across, turn. [30 sts]

Row 2 Ch1, dc2tog first 2 sts, dc in next 26 sts, dc2tog final 2 sts, turn. [28 sts]

Row 3 Ch1, dc2tog first 2 sts, dc in each st to final 2 sts, dc2tog, turn. [26 sts]

Rows 4-8 As Row 3. [16 sts]

Fasten off.

Draw around a Peak onto the plastic and cut out the shape so it’s approx 0.5cm smaller than Peak.
