Simply Crochet

MARIE CASTRO

Crochet is in my blood, basically. My mum and grandmothers were always crocheting, and I was a super-curious child. When I was eight years-old I started crocheting some scarves, cowls, hats and other easy projects with my mum. I was a very practical child so wanted to learn things

I could do by myself without having to ask for help. I was born here in Brazil and handmade techniques are a huge part of our culture, thankfully.

Usually I get inspiration from every day life but materials, textures and colours give me a lot of ideas as well. Travelling encourages me to notice new combinations of colour and shape too.

I have yarn everywhere at home. If someone visited me now, they’d even find yarn in my kitchen! I crochet everywhere and it can look a little messy to other people. But for me it is a positive and creative mess. I have tons of projects that I’ve started and I need to finish – I guess like almost every other crochet lover!

Probably one thing I am very proud of is that my crochet work indirectly helps people to get through some difficult times. I get messages everyday from people saying how crochet really was a light at the end of the tunnel for them. I am so glad that we can overcome distance and different cultures with yarn and crochet hooks. For me it’s good to create crochet garments, but more important to touch people’s lives and show them how crochet can be part of a healthy way of living.

I post my crochet tutorials on YouTube and you can also see my handmade lifestyle on Instagram.
