TENSION

17 sts and 12 rows to measure 10x10cm (4x4in) over half treble crochet using a 4mm hook or size needed to obtain tension

ABBREVIATI­ONS For a full list, see page 88

The combinatio­n of half treble stitches and a central stitch pattern make a lovely, textured feature of this jumper. The button shoulders make for easy dressing.

NOTES

Jumper is made from bottom up in separate pieces for Front, Back and Sleeves. There is raglan decreasing to fit the Sleeves, and Button Tabs are made to sew into the raglan seam at the front. The Jumper is worked in htr throughout, with a Stitch Pattern panel in the centre. The pattern for this panel is written out below before the pattern instructio­ns.

Beg ch1 does not count as a st throughout.

WS row (Ch1, skip next st, tr in bl of st 2 rows below) repeat for number of sts stated.

FRONT AND BACK MAKE 2

Ch39 (43: 47: 53: 57).

Row 1 (WS) Htr in second ch from hook and in each ch to end, turn. [38 (42: 46: 52: 56) sts] Row 2 (RS) Ch1, (htr in next st, FPtr around next st) rep to final 2 sts, htr in final 2 sts, turn.

Row 3 Ch1, htr in first 2 sts, (BPtr around next st, htr in next st) rep to end, turn.

Row 4 As Row 2.

Row 5 Ch1, 13 (14: 16: 18: 19)htr, (ch1, skip next st, htr in next st) 6 (7: 7: 8: 9) times, 13 (14: 16: 18: 19)htr, turn.

Stitch Patt will be worked on central panel of 12 (14: 14: 16: 18) sts in following rows. Mark first and last sts of panel with stitch markers, moving markers up each row.

Row 6 Ch1, htr in each st to first marker, RS row of Stitch Patt over marked section, htr in each st to end, turn.

Row 7 Ch1, htr in each st to first marker, WS row of Stitch Patt over marked section, htr in each st to end, turn.

Rows 6 and 7 set the pattern.

Rep Rows 6-7 another 8 (7: 8: 11: 13) times. Do not fasten off.

RAGLAN SHAPING

Row 1 (RS) Ss into first 3 sts, htr in same st as last ss and next 10 (11: 13: 15: 16) sts to marker, RS row of Stitch Patt over marked section, htr in each st to last 2 sts, turn leaving rem sts unworked. [34 (38: 42: 48: 52) sts]

Row 2 (decrease row) Ch1, htr2tog, htr in each st to marker, Stitch Patt over marked section working WS or RS row as appropriat­e, htr in each st to final 2 sts, htr2tog, turn.

Rep Row 2 another 8 (10: 12: 14: 16) times.

Row 4 As Row 2.

MAIN SLEEVE

Row 1 Ch1, 2htr in first st, 6 (7: 8: 9: 9)htr, (ch1, skip next st, htr in next st) 4 times, 6 (7: 8: 9: 9) htr, 2htr in last st, turn. [24 (26: 28: 30: 30) sts] Stitch Patt will be worked on central panel of 8 sts in following rows. Mark first and last sts of panel with stitch markers, moving markers up each row as you work.

Rows 3-4 As Row 2.

Row 5 (increase row) Ch1, 2htr in first st, htr in each st to marker, Stitch Patt over marked section working RS or WS row as appropriat­e, htr in each st to last st, 2htr in last st, turn. Work 4 (3: 3: 4: 4) rows more as Row 2.

Last 5 (4: 4: 5: 5) rows set increase patt.

Rep increase patt 1 (2: 2: 2: 3) times more. [28 (32: 34: 36: 38) sts]

Rep Row 2 (2: 5: 5: 5), then Row 2 once more. [28 (32: 36: 38: 40) sts, 16 (19: 21: 25: 30) rows of Main Sleeve]

If you need to make the Sleeve slightly longer, which might be needed to fit a four year-old, then add extra rows of Row 2 at this point.

RAGLAN SHAPING

Row 1 Ss into first 3 sts, htr in same st as last ss and next 7 (9: 11: 12: 13) sts to marker, Stitch Patt over marked section working WS or RS as appropriat­e, htr in each st to last 2 sts, turn leaving rem sts unworked. [24 (28: 32: 34: 36) sts]

SIZE 3 4 YRS ONLY

Work 1 row as Row 2 of Main Sleeve.

ALL SIZES

Decrease row Ch1, htr2tog, htr in each st to marker, Stitch Patt over marked section working WS or RS row as appropriat­e, htr in each st to last 2 sts, htr2tog, turn.

Rep Decrease row, 9 (11: 13: 14: 15) times more. [4 (4: 4: 4: 4) sts]

Once decreases reach marked section, remove markers and cont working decreases over first 2 and last 2 sts of Stitch Patt only, work the htr2tog in fl/bl to match that row of Stitch Patt.

SIZES 2 3 YRS AND 3 4 YRS ONLY Work 1 row as Row 2 of Main Sleeve.

Fasten off.

TO MAKE UP

Sew side, underarm and Back raglan seams, leaving Front raglan seams open.

FRONT BUTTON TABS

Join yarn to unseamed side of Sleeve row just inside neckline. Work the Left side first, as this will be the side with RS facing.

Row 1 (RS) Ch1, 8 (10: 10: 12: 12)htr evenly, turn. [8 (10: 10: 12: 12) sts]

Row 2 Ch1, htr in each st to end, turn.

Row 3 (buttonhole row) Ch1, 2 (3: 3: 4: 4)htr, ch1, skip next st, 2htr, ch1, skip next st, 2 (3: 3: 4: 4)htr, turn.

Row 4 Ch1, htr in each st or ch to end.

Fasten off.

For Right side, rejoin yarn opposite lower end of the first tab, so you can work first row on RS.

TO FINISH

Sew buttons to Front to match buttonhole­s. Weave in all ends and block lightly to measuremen­ts.
