TENSION

18 sts and 20 rounds to measure 10x10cm (4x4in) over double crochet using a 4mm hook, or size needed to obtain correct tension

ABBREVIATIONS post-tr join Work the post st in patt to last 2 loops on hook, insert hook into beg post tr of round, yrh, draw through this stitch and all loops on hook

BPtr2tog *Yrh, insert hook around post of st indicated from back, yrh and pull up a loop, yrh and pull through 2 loops on hook; rep from * once more, yrh and pull through all loops on hook

For a full list, see page 88

Get your hook into something really practical with these fingerless mittens. Keeping your wrists covered stops those chilly drafts going up coat sleeves, and snug wrists mean your fingers actually stay warmer too, so they are able to text, write, or crochet.

NOTES

Mittens are worked in rounds up to the Thumb Opening. The Thumb Opening section continues in the pattern set, but working in rows rather than rounds. The remainder of the Mittens continue in rounds. Edging is worked around the finger opening before the Thumb is worked over the Thumb Opening row-ends. There is a Stitch Diagram on page 89, which you can refer to for the cabled section. Read all RS rows from left to right and WS rows from right to left.

Place markers in the first and final sts of the cabled section; move them up as you work.

MITTS

RIGHT MITTEN

Ch32 (36: 40), ss to beg ch to form a loop. Round 1 (RS) Ch1 (does not count as st throughout), dc in each ch around insert hook under 2 loops of each ch, ss to beg dc, turn. [32 (36: 40) sts]

For all rem rounds, do not work first dc into st at base of ch as this is the ss that joined the prev round and is not counted as a st. Ensure first dc is worked into the next st (the dc), and the final dc is worked into the final dc immediately before the ss join to maintain st count and create a less visible join.

Round 2 (WS) Ch1, dc in each st around, ss to beg dc, turn.

Refer to the Stitch Diagram on page 89 for the cabled section.

Round 3 Ch1, dc in first 17 (20: 23) sts, FPtr around next 2 sts from Round 1 (pm in first FPtr to mark first st of cabled section), skip 2 sts on current round, dc in next 2 sts, FPtr in next st to the left on Round 1, FPtr in next st across from Round 1, skip 2 sts on current round, dc in next st, FPtr around same st from Round 1 as prev FPtr, FPtr around next st from Round 1, skip 2 sts on current round, dc in next 2 sts, FPtr around 2 sts directly below in Round 1, (pm in final st of cabled section) dc in rem 2 (3: 4) sts, ss to beg dc, turn.

Round 5 Ch1, dc in each st to marker, FPtr around next 2 sts, skip 1 dc, FPtr around next 2 BP sts, dc in second BPtr, dc in next 3 sts, dc in next BPtr, FPtr around next 2 BP sts, skip next dc, FPtr around next 2 sts, dc in each st to end, ss to beg dc, turn.

Round 6 Ch1, dc in each st to marker, BPtr around next st, BPtr2tog next 2 sts, BPtr around next st, dc in top of same st, dc in next 6 sts, BPtr around same st as prev dc, BPtr2tog next 2 sts, BPtr around next st, dc in each st to end, ss to beg dc, turn.

Round 7 Ch1, dc in each st to marker, FPtr around next st, 2FPtr around next st, FPtr around next st, skip 1 dc, dc in next 5 sts, skip next dc, FPtr around next BP st, 2FPtr around

next st, FPtr around next st, dc in each st to end, ss to beg dc, turn.

Round 8 Ch1, dc in each st to marker, BPtr around next 2 sts, dc in next st, BPtr around same st as prev dc, BPtr around next st, skip next dc, dc in next 3 sts, skip next dc, BPtr around next 2 sts, dc in same st as last BPtr, BPtr around next 2 sts, dc in each st to end, ss to beg dc, turn.

Round 11 Ch1, dc in each st to marker, FPtr around next 2 sts, dc in next 2 sts, skip next dc, FPtr around next st, (FPtr, dc, FPtr) in next st, FPtr around next st, skip next dc, dc in next 2 sts, FPtr around next 2 sts, dc in each st to end, ss to beg dc, turn.

Rows 4-11 form the pattern.

Do not fasten off.

THUMB OPENING

Work another 9 (10: 11) rows in pattern set, without joining each round with a ss. Work the next round in pattern set, closing the round with a ss.

Do not fasten off.

WRIST SECTION

Continue in pattern set working a total of 34 (34: 34) rounds. This will result in 4 full repeats of the cabled pattern. For a shorter Mitten you can work a total of 26 rounds, making sure you end with a Round 10 repeat.

Do not fasten off.

CUFF

Round 1 (RS) Ch1, dc in each st around working the dc into the BPtr2tog between the centre of the posts, ss to beg dc, turn. [32 (36: 40) sts] Round 2 (WS) Ch2 (counts as a tr), tr in each st around, ss to top of beg ch-2, turn.

Round 3 Ch1, (FPtr around next st, BPtr around next st) rep to final st, post-tr join, turn.

Round 4 Ch1, (BPtr around next st, FPtr around next st) rep to final st, post-tr join, turn. Repeat Rounds 3-4, then rep Round 3 once more.

Fasten off.

FINGER HOLE EDGING

Join yarn into opposite side of foundation ch. Work sts in next round over the foundation ch and into same sp as sts from Round 1. Round 1 (RS) Ch1, (dc in next st, ch1, skip 1 st) rep around, ss to beg dc. [32 (36: 40) sts] Fasten off.

THUMB

Join yarn with a standing dc into ss at end of Thumb Opening.

Round 1 (WS) Dc in each row-end to next ss, dc in ss, dc in each row-end to end of round, ss to beg dc, turn. [18 (20: 22) sts]

Round 2 (RS) Ch1, dc in next 3 (4: 5) sts, htr in next 3 sts, tr in next 6 sts, htr in next 3 sts, dc in final 3 (4: 5) sts, ss to beg dc, turn.
