Hats off to you if you regularly don a hat – it’s a statement of your unique style. Why not take it up a notch and add an embellished band for a pop of colour and texture?

NOTES

Hat Band is worked by increasing the length with each Fan, making it easy to adjust the length to fit your hat. There is some stretch in the band, so aim to make it a close fit. Pattern is worked in rows; each row consists of one Fan. The first Fan and the final Fan are joined together at the end.

HAT BAND

Using Nectarine, ch4 (leaving a long starting tail). First Fan (RS) Tr in fourth ch from hook, ch3, (7dtr, ch3, ss) around post of first tr (treating it as a ch-3 sp), turn.

Second Fan (WS) Ch3 (counts as a tr throughout), (7dtr, ch3, ss) into final ch-3 sp of First Fan, turn.

Subsequent Fans Ch3, (7dtr, ch3, ss) into final ch-3 sp of prev Fan, turn.

Continue working until Band fits your hat, ending with a RS Fan.

Final Fan (WS) Ch3, 6dtr into last ch-3 sp of Previous Fan.

Fasten off leaving a long tail.

Line up First and Final Fans, ensuring the Band is not twisted. Using the long tails, carefully sew the Band ends together so that the pattern appears seamless. Weave in ends.

TOP EDGING

With RS facing, join Black with a ss in first dtr of any Fan along top.

Round 1 (RS) Ss in next st, ch4, *ss in first dtr of next Fan, ss in next st, ch4; rep from * around, ss to first ss to join.

Round 2 (RS) Ch1 (does not count as st), dc in each ss and each ch around, ss to beg dc. Fasten off and weave in ends.

LOWER EDGING

Turn Band over and join Black with a ss in sixth dtr on any Fan.

Round 1 (RS) Ss in next st, ch4, *ss in sixth st on next Fan, ss in next st, ch4; rep from * around, ss to beg ss.

Round 2 (RS) As Round 2 of Top Edging. Fasten off and weave in ends.
