YOU WILL NEED

■ Any DK yarn in black, beige,

yellow and brown

■ A 4mm (US G/6) hook

5-dtr cl *Yrh twice, insert hook in st indicated, yrh and pull up a loop, (yrh and pull through 2 loops) twice; rep from * 4 times more, yrh and pull through all loops on hook

NOTES

Square is worked in rounds with RS facing throughout.

LION’S SHARE SQUARE

Using black, make a magic loop.

Round 1 (RS) Ch1 (does not count as st throughout), 8dc into loop, ss to beg dc. [8 sts]

Fasten off.

Join yellow in bl of any st.

Round 2 Ch3 (counts as tr throughout), tr in bl of st at base of ch-3, 2tr in bl of next 3 sts, *change to beige, 5-dtr cl in bl of next st, change to yellow, tr in bl of same st as cl, 2tr in bl of next st; repeat from * once more, ss to top of beg ch-3. [16 sts]

Fasten off beige only.

Round 3 Ch3, 2tr in next st, (tr in next st, 2tr in next st) 7 times, ss to bl of beg ch-3. [24 sts]

Round 4 (Working in bl throughout) Ch3, 2tr in next st, (tr in next st, 2tr in next st) 11 times, ss to top of beg ch-3. [36 sts]

Round 5 Ch4 (counts as dtr), dtr in st at base of ch-4, *(dtr, tr) in next st, tr in next 5 sts, (tr, dtr) in next st, 2dtr in next st, ch2, 2dtr in next st; rep from * 3 times more omitting final 2 sts on last rep, ss to top of beg ch-4. [52 sts, 4 ch-2 sps]

Fasten off.

Join brown in unused fl of first st from Round 3 with a ss.

Round 6 *Ch1, (tr, picot, tr) in next st, ch1, ss in next st; repeat from * around.

Fasten off.

Using black and beige, embroider eyes and a mouth. You can use the image as a guide.

Weave in all ends.
