YOU WILL NEED

■ Any DK yarn in white, black, yellow, pale blue and bright blue

■ A 4mm (US G/6) hook

ABBREVIATI­ONS

surface crochet Position yarn on the WS of your work, *insert hook from RS to WS where you would like the surface crochet to begin, yrh and pull through to RS, insert hook back through to WS moving in direction you want the surface crochet to travel, yrh and pull loop through to RS and through the loop on your hook; rep from * as directed

NOTES

Square is worked in rounds with RS facing throughout. Wings are made separately and sewn to the Square at the end.

BUMBLY BEE SQUARE

Using black, ch4.

Round 1 11tr in fourth ch from hook (skipped ch-3 counts as st), ss to top of beg ch-3. [12 sts] Fasten off.

Join yellow in any st.

Round 2 Ch3 (counts as tr throughout), tr in st at base of ch-3, 2tr in each st around, ss to top of beg ch-3. [24 sts]

Round 3 Ch3, 2tr in next st, (tr in next st, 2tr in next st) 11 times, ss to top of beg ch-3. [36 sts] Fasten off.

Join pale blue in any st.

Round 4 (Working in bl throughout) Ch1 (does not count as st throughout), *dc in next 2 sts, htr in next 2 sts, (2tr, ch2, 2tr) in next st, htr in next 2 sts, dc in next 2 sts; rep from * 3 times more, ss to beg dc. [48 sts, 4 ch-2 sps]

Round 5 Ch1, *dc in each st to ch-2 sp, (dc, ch2, dc) in ch-sp; rep from * around ss to beg dc.

[56 sts, 4 ch-2 sps]

Fasten off.

Join bright blue in any st.

Round 6 As Round 5. [64 sts, 4 ch-2 sps]

Fasten off. WINGS (MAKE 2)

Using white, ch3.

Round 1 9htr in third ch from hook, ss to top of beg htr. [9 sts]

Fasten off leaving a long tail.

TO FINISH

Using black, surface crochet around the top of the sts from Rounds 2 and 3.

Using white, embroider 2 small sts over Round 1 for the eyes. Sew the Wings to the top of the bee; you can use the image as a guide.

Weave in all ends.
