YOU WILL NEED

■ Any 4ply yarn in 3 colours ■ A 2.5mm (US B/1 or C/2) hook

NOTES

Square is worked in rounds, with RS facing throughout. Colours are referred to as Yarns A-C.

OCTONAUT SQUARE

Using Yarn A, make a magic loop.

Round 1 Ch1 (does not count as st throughout), 8dc in loop, ss to beg dc. [8 sts]

Round 2 Ch3 (counts as tr throughout), tr in same st, 2tr in each st around, ss to top of beg ch-3. [16 sts] Fasten off.

Join Yarn B in sp between any 2tr.

Round 3 Ch3, tr in same sp, (ch2, skip 2 sts, 2tr in sp between next 2 sts) 7 times, ch2, skip final 2 sts, ss to top of beg ch-3.

[16 sts, 8 ch-2 sps]

Fasten off.

Join Yarn C in any ch-2 sp.

Round 4 Ch5 (counts as tr, ch2), tr in same ch-2 sp, *skip next st, 2tr in sp between next 2 tr, skip next st, (tr, ch2, tr) in next ch-2 sp; rep from * 6 times more, skip next st, 2tr in sp between next 2 tr, skip final st, ss to third ch of beg ch-5.

[32 sts, 8 ch-2 sps]

Round 5 Ch1, *dc in each st to ch-2 sp, (dc, ch2, dc) in ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ss to beg dc.

[48 sts, 4 ch-2 sps]

Round 6 Ch1, dc in first 2 sts, *dc in ch-1 sp, ch7, skip 6 sts, dc in next ch-1 sp, dc in each st to next ch-1 sp; rep from * twice more, dc in ch-1 sp, ch7, skip 6 sts, dc in next ch-1 sp, dc in each st to end, ss to beg dc. [32 sts, 4 ch-7 sps]

Round 7 Ch1, *dc in each st to ch-7 sp, (5dc, ch2, 5dc) in ch-7 sp; rep from * around, ss to beg dc.

[72 sts, 4 ch-2 sps]

Rounds 8-9 Ch1, * dc in each st to ch-2 sp, (dc, ch2, dc) in ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ss to beg dc.

[88 sts, 4 ch-2 sps]

Fasten off and weave in ends.
