GRANNY SQUARE THROW

A granny square with a twist is all you need in Marjan Gouda’s design

Square up to the task of rejuvenati­ng a bedroom or sofa by making a stylish and easy throw. The choice of colours and bold design give it a fresh look and the tassels add a neat nishing feature.

NOTES

Throw is made up of a large Granny Square worked in rounds. The corners are worked off each straight edge of the Granny Square to form the Throw.

THROW CENTRAL GRANNY SQUARE

Using Yarn A, ch4 and ss in last ch from hook to form a loop.

Round 1 (RS) Ch5 (counts as tr, ch2 throughout), (3tr in loop, ch2) 3 times, 2tr in loop ss to third ch of beg ch-5, ss into ch-5 sp. [4 3-tr groups, 4 ch-2 sps]

Round 2 (RS) Ch5, 3tr in same ch-2 sp, *ch1, (3tr, ch2, 3tr) in next ch-2 sp; rep from * twice more, ch1, 2tr in same sp as beg ch-5, ss to third ch of beg ch-5, ss into ch-5 sp.

[8 3-tr groups, 4 ch-1 sps, 4 ch-2 sps]

Round 3 Ch5, 3tr in same sp, ch1, *3tr in next ch-1 sp, ch1, (3tr, ch2, 3tr, ch1) in next ch-2 sp; rep from * twice more, 3tr in next ch-1 sp, ch1, 2tr in same sp as ch-5, ss to third ch of beg ch-5,

ss into ch-2 sp.

[12 3-tr groups, 8 ch-1 sps, 4 ch-2 sps]

Round 4 Ch5, 3tr in same sp, ch1, *(3tr, ch1) in each ch-1 sp across to next ch-2 sp, (3tr, ch2, 3tr, ch1) in ch-2 sp; rep from * twice more, *(3tr, ch1) in each ch-1 sp to beg ch-5, 2tr In same sp as ch-5, ss to third ch of beg ch-5, ss into ch-2 sp. [16 3-tr groups, 12 ch-1 sps, 4 ch-2 sps]

Rounds 5-8 As Round 4.

[32 3-tr groups, 28 ch-1 sps, 5 ch-2 sps at end of Round 8.

Change to Yarn B.

Rounds 9-32 Repeat Round 4, changing colour every 8 rounds in the foll sequence: Yarn B, Yarn C, Yarn D. You should have worked 128 3-tr groups in Round 32, or 32 3-tr groups across each side. Fasten off.

CORNERS

The corners are worked in decreasing rows over each side of the Granny Square.

With RS facing, join Yarn E in any ch-2 sp.

Row 1 (RS) Ch4 (counts as dtr throughout), skip 3tr, (3tr, ch1) in each ch-1 sp to final ch-1 sp, 3tr in final ch-1 sp, dtr in next ch-2 sp, turn.

[31 3-tr groups, 30 ch-1 sps, 2 dtr]

Rows 2-30 As Row 1.

Row 31 Ch4, yrh insert hook in ch-1 sp, yrh and pull up a loop, yrh and pull through 2 loops on hook, yrh twice, insert hook in final dtr, yrh and pull up a loop, (yrh and pull through 2 loops) twice, yrh and pull through all loops on hook. Fasten off.

Repeat Corner on remaining 3 sides.

BORDER

With RS facing, join Yarn E in any corner.

Round 1 (RS) Ch1 (does not count as st), *3dc in corner, pm in second dc of corner, 3dc around next 31 row-ends, dc in ch-2 sp of Granny Square, 3dc around next 31 row-ends; rep from * 3 times more, ss to beg dc. [264 sts] Round 2 (RS) Ch3 (counts as tr), *tr in each st to marker, 3tr in marked st; rep from * around, ss to top of beg ch-3.

Fasten off and weave in all ends.

TASSELS (MAKE 4)

Cut 2 lengths of Yarn E, 15cm long.

Wrap Yarn E around the cardboard 40 times. Thread one strand through the top of the cardboard and secure the wrapped strands with a small knot. Cut the Tassel from the cardboard. Wrap the second strand of yarn 1cm from the top of the tassel, secure with a knot and weave ends through the centre of the Tassel. Use the upper strand to secure the Tassels to each corner of the Throw.
