FLAGS

Where in the world have you been? Hook up a few of these flags by Sara Huntington to represent countries you’ve visited

■ Stylecraft Naturals Organic Cotton (100% cotton, 50g/105m), 1 ball of each: Leaf (7171), Citronelle (7175), Coral (7180), Gypsum (7168), Deep Sea (7199)

■ A 2.5mm (US B/1 or C/2) hook

■ Yellow stranded cotton

■ Black stranded cotton

■ Needle with a point

■ PVA glue

■ 6 self-adhesive magnets (available from

amzn.to/3qemtfz)

TENSION

Tension is not critical for this project, but it may affect the yarn quantities required

MEASUREMEN­TS

Each Flag measures approx 6x5cm (2 x2in)

NOTES

Flags are worked in rows throughout. There is a Basic Flag pattern written first. Countries’ Flags refer to this pattern, referencin­g the colours required.

FLAGS BASIC FLAG

Ch13.

Row 1 (RS) Dc in second ch from hook and each ch across, turn. [12 sts]

Rows 2-10 Ch1 (does not count as st throughout), dc in each st across, turn.

Fasten off. 1 FLAG OF THE UNITED KINGDOM

Using the Basic Flag, work Row 1 using Deep Sea. For Rows 2-4 use Deep Sea for the first 5 sts, Coral for the next 2 sts and Deep Sea for the final 5 sts. Work Rows 5-6 in Coral. For Rows 7-10 use Deep Sea for the first 5 sts, Coral for the next 2 sts and Deep Sea for the final 5 sts.

Fasten off.

Using the image as a guide, embroider the rem design with Coral and Gypsum.

2 FLAG OF JAPAN

Using the Basic Flag, work with Gypsum throughout.

Fasten off.

Using Coral, make a mgic loop.

Ch1, 6dc in loop, ss to beg dc.

Round 1 (RS)

[6 sts]

Round 2 (RS) Ch1, 2dc in each st around, ss to beg dc. [12 sts]

Fasten off.

Sew to the RS of the Flag.

3 FLAG OF CHINA

Using the Basic Flag, work with Coral

throughout.

Fasten off.

Using yellow stranded cotton, embroider the stars and dots in the top-left corner.

4 FLAG OF INDIA

Using the Basic Flag, work Rows 1-3 in Coral, Rows 4-7 in Gypsum and Rows 8-10 in Leaf.

Fasten off.

Using black stranded cotton, embroider the circle motif on the central section.

5 FLAG OF GAMBIA

Using the Basic Flag, work Rows 1-3 in Leaf, Row 4 in Gypsum, Rows 5-6 in Deep Sea, Row 7 in Gypsum, Rows 8-10 in Coral.

Fasten off. 6 FLAG OF COLOMBIA

Using the Basic Flag, work Rows 1-2 in Coral, Rows 3-4 in Deep Sea, Rows 5-10 in Citronelle.

Fasten off. 7 FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Using the Basic Flag, *work 1 row in Coral, work 1 row in Gypsum; rep from * twice more (6 rows worked). For Row 7, work first 7 sts in Coral and final 5 sts in Deep Sea. For Row 8, work first 5 sts in Deep Sea and final 7 sts in Gypsum. For Row 9 work as Row 7. For Row 10 work as Row 8.

Fasten off.

Using Gypsum, embroider the stars over the top-left corner.

TO FINISH

Weave in all ends.

Mix the glue with water, approx 3 parts glue to 2 parts water. Soak each Flag in the glue

mixture and pin out to dry.

Once dry, secure a magnet to the WS of each Flag.

■ A 3.5mm (US E/4) hook

■ Cushion pad, 40x40cm

TENSION

19 sts and 21 rows measure 10x10cm (4x4in) over double crochet using a 3.5mm hook, or size needed to obtain correct tension

MEASUREMEN­TS

Cushion measures 40x40cm (15 x15 in)

NOTES

Cushion is made up of 2 panels, which are worked in rows.

For the Front you will need to refer to the Chart on page 92. Each small square represents 1dc. Read all RS rows from right to left and WS rows from left to right. The first few rows have been written out to guide you. Change colour on the final yrh of st before colour change is indicated. Where a colour is used again within 5 or so stitches, carry the unused colour across on the WS keeping a consistent tension that’s not too tight.

To avoid carrying yarn strands across the entire width of the Cushion, use separate balls for different areas. As you have just one ball of Gypsum you will need to divide this into 2 balls.

CUSHION FRONT

Using Gypsum, ch73.

Row 1 (RS) Dc in second ch from hook and each ch across, turn. [72 sts]

Row 2 (WS) Ch1 (does not count as st throughout), dc in each st across, turn.

Rows 3-5 As Row 2.

Row 6 (WS) Ch1, dc in first 32 sts, change to Leaf, dc in next 9 sts, change to Gypsum, dc in final 31 sts, turn.

Row 7 Ch1, dc in first 26 sts, change to Leaf, dc in next 19 sts, change to Citronelle, dc in next st, change to Gypsum, dc in final 26 sts, turn.

Row 8 Ch1, dc in first 24 sts, change to Citronelle, dc in next 2 sts, change to Leaf, dc in next 22 sts, change to Citronelle, dc in next st, change to Gypsum, dc in final 23 sts, turn.

Rows 9-80 Cont in patt, following chart for all colour changes. Fasten off.

EDGING

With RS facing, join Leaf in top-right corner.

Round 1 (RS) Ch1, *dc in each st and row-end across to corner, 3dc in corner; rep from * 3 times more, ss to top of beg ch-3. [316 sts]

Round 2 Ch1, *dc in each st to next 3-dc group, dc in first dc of group, 3dc in next dc, dc in next dc; rep from * around to end, ss to beg dc. [324 sts]

Rounds 3-4 As Round 2. [340 sts] Fasten off. BACK

Using Leaf, ch73.

Row 1 (RS) Dc in second ch from hook, dc in each st across, turn.

Rows 2-80 Ch1, dc in each st across, turn. Fasten off. EDGING

Using Citronelle, work Edging as for Front. Fasten off. TO MAKE UP

Place Front and Back panels together, with RS facing out. Work next round through both pieces to join.

Join Leaf in corner.

Round 1 Ch1, *3dc in corner, dc in each st to next corner; rep from * 3 times more inserting the cushion pad before joining the final side, ss to beg dc.

Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Change colour on the final yrh of stitch before colour change is indicated. Carry the unused

colour across the top of your stitches, enclosing the strand as you work.

Using Deep Sea, ch40.

Round 1 (RS) 2dc in second ch from hook, dc in each ch across to final ch, 3dc in the final ch, turn to work in opposite side of foundation ch, dc in each ch across, ss to beg dc, turn. [80 sts]

Round 2 (WS) Ch1 (does not count as st throughout), dc in each st around, ss to beg dc, turn.

Markers are placed in next round to highlight charted area. Move the markers up as you work.

Round 3 Ch1, dc in first 2 sts, pm in first st to mark first st of chart, change to Citronelle, dc in next st, change to Deep Sea, dc in next 25 sts, change to Citronelle, dc in next st, change to Deep Sea, dc in next 11 sts, pm in last st to mark end of chart, dc in final 40 sts, ss to beg dc, turn.

Round 4 Ch1, dc in first 51 sts, change to Citronelle, dc in next st, change to Deep Sea, dc in next 26 sts, change to Citronelle, dc in next st, change to Deep Blue, dc in final st, ss to beg dc, turn. Rounds 5-26 Cont in patt, following the Chart for all colour changes.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

TO FINISH

Pin the zip into the opening, folding the end in slightly. Once happy with the position, use Deep Sea to sew into place.
