A warm hat is always a welcome gift for those chillier occasions. King Cole’s cable creation is ideal for keeping heads snug with its extra cosy folded rib. This unisex design works well in any colour combo – you could even try making the rib and pompom in a fun contrast colour. The simple cable pattern is easy- peasy to follow – if you’re new to cables you’ll get the hang of these ones in no time at all!

POMPOM HAT

Cast on 118 ( 126: 134: 142) sts using 3 mm needles and thumb method. Row 1 *K2, P2; rep from * to last 2 sts, K2. Row 2 *P2, K2; rep from * to last 2 sts, P2. These 2 rows form 2x2 rib. Work 15 ( 17: 19: 23) more rows in 2x2 rib. Next row P to end inc 2 ( 3:3: 3) sts evenly across row. [120 ( 129: 137: 145) sts] Change to 4mm needles and work as follows: Row 1 *P7 ( 6:7: 6), K10; rep from * to last st, P1. Row 2 K1, *P10, K7 ( 6:7: 6); rep from * to end. Rep rows 1 and 2 once. Row 5 *P7 ( 6:7: 6), C10B; rep from * to last st, P1. Row 6 K1, *P10, K7 ( 6:7: 6); rep from * to end. Rep rows 1 and 2 four times. These 14 rows form patt. Work 28 rows more in patt.

MAKING UP

Sew back seam reversing sewing for 5 ( 5.5: 6.5: 6.5) cm for turnback. Make a 7cm diameter pompom and attach to crown. Cover with a clean damp tea towel and leave until dry. See ball band for washing and further care instructio­ns.
