Make time to cast on our vin­tage pat­tern.

Snow­ball throw­ing aside, there’s lit­tle that’s more fun than don­ning your favourite fes­tive at­tire and saun­ter­ing down­stairs come Christ­mas morn­ing. So why not spend the run up cast­ing on and knit­ting the most spec­taular cre­ation? This snowman jumper, re­worked from a vin­tage Sir­dar pat­tern, is a win­ner!

NOTES

When work­ing in more than one colour, do not strand yarns across work, but use a sep­a­rate ball of yarn for each change of colour. Twist yarns over each other on wrong side of work when chang­ing colour to avoid un­sightly holes.

BACK

Cast on 109 ( 115: 121: 127: 133: 139) sts us­ing 3 mm nee­dles and Yarn A.

Row 1 Sl1, K1, *P1, K1; rep from * to last st, K1. Row 2 Sl1,*P1, K1; rep from * to end. Rep Rows 1 and 2 11 more times.

Change to 4mm nee­dles. Work­ing in st st through­out, be­gin­ning on st 16 ( 13: 10: 7:4: 1) and end­ing on st 78 ( 81: 84: 87: 90: 93), work Rows 1 to 40 of Chart A 3 times, join­ing in and break­ing off colours as re­quired and re­peat­ing the sts in the blue box 3 times. Re­peat Rows 1- 40 of Chart A twice more. Be­gin­ning and end­ing where in­di­cated for Chart A, work Rows 1-36 of Chart B once, join­ing in and break­ing off colours as re­quired and re­peat­ing the sts in the blue box 3 times.**

Row 1 Sl1, *P1, K1; rep from * to end. Row 2 Sl1, K1, *P1, K1; rep from * to last st, K1. Rep Rows 1 and 2 26 times, then rep Row 1 once more.

Cast off loosely in rib.

SLEEVES

(BOTH ALIKE) Cast on 53 ( 53: 53: 57: 57: 57) sts us­ing 3 mm nee­dles and Yarn A. Row 1 Sl1, K1, *P1, K1; rep from * to last st, K1.

Row 2 Sl1, *P1, K1, rep from * to end. Rep Rows 1 and 2, 10 times, then work Row 1 once more.

Row 24 Sl1, (P1, K1) 0 ( 0:0: 1: 1: 1) times, *P1, kfb; rep from * to last 2 ( 2:2: 4: 4: 4) sts, (P1, K1) 1 ( 1:1: 2: 2: 2) times. [78 ( 78: 78: 82: 82: 82) sts]

Change to 4mm nee­dles.

Work­ing in st st through­out, be­gin­ning on st 20 ( 20: 20: 18: 18: 18) and end­ing on st 74 ( 74: 74: 76: 76: 76) work rows 1- 40 of Chart A twice, join­ing in and break­ing off colours as re­quired, AT THE SAME TIME in­creas­ing 1 st at each end of the 4th row and ev­ery fol­low­ing 6th row un­til there are 104 ( 104: 104: 108: 108: 108) sts, end­ing on a row 40 of Chart. Cont to place Chart as set, work rows 1- 40 once more, inc 1 st each end of 5th row and the foll 8th row. [108 ( 108: 108: 112: 112: 112) sts]

Cast off.

TO MAKE UP

Block pieces. Sew up left shoul­der and neckband seams. Fold neckband in half onto wrong side and sew in po­si­tion. Sew up side seams leav­ing ap­prox­i­mately 23 ( 23: 23: 24: 24: 24) cm free to form armholes. Sew up sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves.
