Snowball throwing aside, there’s little that’s more fun than donning your favourite festive attire and sauntering downstairs come Christmas morning. So why not spend the run up casting on and knitting the most spectaular creation? This snowman jumper, reworked from a vintage Sirdar pattern, is a winner!

NOTES

When working in more than one colour, do not strand yarns across work, but use a separate ball of yarn for each change of colour. Twist yarns over each other on wrong side of work when changing colour to avoid unsightly holes.

BACK

Cast on 109 ( 115: 121: 127: 133: 139) sts using 3 mm needles and Yarn A.

Row 1 Sl1, K1, *P1, K1; rep from * to last st, K1. Row 2 Sl1,*P1, K1; rep from * to end. Rep Rows 1 and 2 11 more times.

Change to 4mm needles. Working in st st throughout, beginning on st 16 ( 13: 10: 7:4: 1) and ending on st 78 ( 81: 84: 87: 90: 93), work Rows 1 to 40 of Chart A 3 times, joining in and breaking off colours as required and repeating the sts in the blue box 3 times. Repeat Rows 1- 40 of Chart A twice more. Beginning and ending where indicated for Chart A, work Rows 1-36 of Chart B once, joining in and breaking off colours as required and repeating the sts in the blue box 3 times.**

Keeping continuity of patt (throughout) cont until work measures 66cm, ending with a WS row.

SHAPE SHOULDERS

Cast off 39 ( 42: 45: 48: 51: 54) sts in patt at beg of next 2 rows. Break off yarn, slip rem 31 sts onto a thread.

Work exactly as given for Back to **.

With RS facing, slip first 19 sts of rem 64 ( 67: 70: 73: 76: 79) sts onto a thread, rejoin yarn to rem 45 ( 48: 51: 54: 57: 60) sts and proceed as follows:

NECKBAND

ALL SIZES With RS facing, using 3 mm needles and Yarn A, commencing at top of Left Shoulder pick up and knit 22 sts evenly along left side of neck, knit across 19 sts left on a thread at front of neck, pick up and knit 23 sts evenly along right side of neck and knit across 31 sts left on a thread at back of neck. [95 sts]

Row 1 Sl1, *P1, K1; rep from * to end. Row 2 Sl1, K1, *P1, K1; rep from * to last st, K1. Rep Rows 1 and 2 26 times, then rep Row 1 once more.

Cast off loosely in rib.

SLEEVES

(BOTH ALIKE) Cast on 53 ( 53: 53: 57: 57: 57) sts using 3 mm needles and Yarn A. Row 1 Sl1, K1, *P1, K1; rep from * to last st, K1.

Row 2 Sl1, *P1, K1, rep from * to end. Rep Rows 1 and 2, 10 times, then work Row 1 once more.

Row 24 Sl1, (P1, K1) 0 ( 0:0: 1: 1: 1) times, *P1, kfb; rep from * to last 2 ( 2:2: 4: 4: 4) sts, (P1, K1) 1 ( 1:1: 2: 2: 2) times. [78 ( 78: 78: 82: 82: 82) sts]

Change to 4mm needles.

Working in st st throughout, beginning on st 20 ( 20: 20: 18: 18: 18) and ending on st 74 ( 74: 74: 76: 76: 76) work rows 1- 40 of Chart A twice, joining in and breaking off colours as required, AT THE SAME TIME increasing 1 st at each end of the 4th row and every following 6th row until there are 104 ( 104: 104: 108: 108: 108) sts, ending on a row 40 of Chart. Cont to place Chart as set, work rows 1- 40 once more, inc 1 st each end of 5th row and the foll 8th row. [108 ( 108: 108: 112: 112: 112) sts]

Cast off.

TO MAKE UP

Block pieces. Sew up left shoulder and neckband seams. Fold neckband in half onto wrong side and sew in position. Sew up side seams leaving approximat­ely 23 ( 23: 23: 24: 24: 24) cm free to form armholes. Sew up sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves.
