A quick-to-knit cutie that looks gorgeous and is practical too has to be a wonderful thing, right? This dachshund draught stopper is more than just a quick and easy knit, we’re sure over time our super-squishy canine will turn into a well-loved but handy ‘pet’, keeping you, your family and your guests away from all those unwanted draughts. Knit it using machine washable Bernat Satin yarn and 5 mm needles and in just a few days you’ll have this happy hound on guard – woof!

BODY

Note Yarn is held double throughout. Cast on 5 sts using 5 mm needles and Yarn A held double. Row 1 (K1, M1) 4 times, K1. [9 sts] Row 2 and alt rows Purl. Row 3 *Kfb; rep from * to end of row. [18sts] Row 5 *Kfb, K1; rep from * to end of row. [27 sts] Row 7 *Kfb, K2; rep from * to end of row. [36 sts] Place marker at end of row. Cont even in st st and change colours as follows: Yarn A: 24 rows. ( Yarn B: 2 rows, Yarn A: 3 rows) twice. Yarn B: 2 rows. Yarn A: 20 rows. ( Yarn B: 2 rows, Yarn A: 2 rows) 15 times. Using Yarn B, cont even until work from marker measures 76cm, ending with RS facing for next row.

DECREASE ROWS

Row 1 Using Yarn B, *k2tog, K2; rep from * to end of row. [27 sts] Row 2 and alt rows Purl. Row 3 K2tog, K1; rep from * to end of row. [18 sts] Row 5 K2tog; rep from * to end of row. [9 sts] Break yarn, leaving a long end. Thread end through rem sts and tighten up. Sew side seam, leaving opening for stuffing. Stuff body. Sew opening closed.

LEGS

(MAKE 2 WITH YARN A AND 2 WITH YARN B) Cast on 9 sts using 5 mm needles and yarn held double. Work in st st for 6 rows. Next row (RS) K3, [(K1, P1, K1) all in next st] 3 times, K3. [15 sts] Knit 2 rows. Cast off knitwise. Sew side edges together. Sew legs to body as shown in picture.

TAIL

Cast on 23 sts using 5 mm needles and Yarn A. Work in st st for 5cm, ending with RS facing for next row. Cast off. Fold Tail lengthwise. Sew cast- on and cast- off edges together, tapering to a point at one end and pulling the yarn to make it bend. Attach the Tail to the Body.

EARS (MAKE 2) Cast on 20 sts using 5 mm needles and Yarn B held double. Row 1 ( WS) Knit. Row 2 Kfb, knit to end of row. [1 st inc’d] Rep last 2 rows 4 times more. [25 sts] Knit 9 rows. Cast off.

FINISHING

Sew Ears in position. Attach buttons for eyes. With Yarn B, embroider nose and mouth. Weave in ends.
