Yarn used knits as DK to this tension: 22 sts and 28 rows to measure 10x10cm (4x4in) over st st using 4mm needles

ABBREVIATI­ONS

For a full list see page 95 Put aside traditiona­l Christmas shades and knit a pastel treat that can be worn all winter long. The bear motif is worked using intarsia and the scarf is knitted in two pieces with a trio of garter stitch stripes. Darn each scarf piece on after the making up is done, then tie up loosely for a 3D effect. We think he’s roarsome!

BACK

Cast on 62 ( 66: 70: 74: 78) sts using 3 mm needles and Yarn A. Row 1 *K2, P2; rep from * to last 2 sts, K2 Row 2 *P2, K2; rep from * to last 2 sts, P2. These 2 rows set rib pattern. Rep last 2 rows 3 more times. ** Change to 4mm needles. Continue straight in st st until Back measures 21 ( 22: 23: 24: 25) cm, ending with a WS row.

SHAPE ARMHOLES

Cast off 2(3: 3:4: 4) sts at beg of next 2 rows. [58 ( 60: 64: 66: 70) sts] Continue straight in st st until Back measures 34 ( 35: 36: 37: 38) cm, ending with a WS row. Next row Cast off 18 ( 19: 20: 21: 22), PM (to mark shoulder), slip next 22 ( 22: 24: 24: 26) sts onto a stitch holder, PM, cast off 18 ( 19: 20: 21: 22).

FRONT

Work as for Back to **. Change to 4mm needles. Beginning with a knit row, continue in st st for 2 rows. Next row K6 ( 8: 10: 12: 14), work Row 1 of chart, K6 ( 8: 10: 12: 14). Next row P6 ( 8: 10: 12: 14), work Row 2 of Chart, P6 ( 8: 10: 12: 14). Last 2 rows form patt. Continue in patt from Chart until Front measures 21 ( 22: 23: 24: 25) cm, ending with a WS row.

SHAPE ARMHOLES

Cast off 2(3: 3: 4: 4) sts at beginning of next 2 rows, working from Chart as set. [58 ( 60: 64: 66: 70) sts] Continue in st st to end of Chart. Continue in st st until Front measures 28 ( 29: 30: 31: 32.5) cm, ending with a WS row.

SHAPE NECK

Next row K24 ( 26: 27: 28: 29), turn. Next row Cast off 2 sts, purl to end. [22 ( 24: 25: 26: 27) sts] Next row Knit to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1. SLEEVES (MAKE 2) Cast on 28 ( 30: 32: 34: 36) sts using 3 mm needles and Yarn A. Next row *K2, P2; rep from * to last 0 ( 2: 0:2: 0) sts, K( 2: 0: 2: 0). Next row P0 ( 2:0: 2: 0), *K2, P2; rep from * to end. Rep last 2 rows 3 more times. Change to 4mm needles. Knit 1 row, increasing 4 sts evenly along row. [32 ( 34: 36: 38: 40) sts] Beg with a purl row, work in st st for 3 rows. Cont working in st st, inc 1 st at each end of each knit row until there are 42 ( 44: 46: 48: 50) sts, then every foll 4th row until there are 60 ( 60: 62: 64: 66) sts. Continue in st st without shaping until Sleeve measures 30 ( 31: 32: 34: 34) cm or desired length. Cast off.

NECKBAND

Join right shoulder seam. Using 4mm needles and Yarn A, with RS facing pick up and knit 17 ( 18: 18: 19: 19) sts down left front neck, 10 ( 8: 10: 10: 12) sts across front neck, 17 ( 18: 18: 19: 19) sts up right front neck and 22 ( 22: 24: 24: 26) sts from stitch holder across back neck. [66 ( 66: 70: 72: 76) sts] Next row Purl. Next row *K2, P2; rep from * to last 2 ( 2: 2:0: 0) sts, K2 ( 2:2: 0: 0). Next row P2 ( 2:2: 0: 0), *K2, P2; rep from * to end. Rep last 2 rows twice more. Cast off loosely in rib.

MAKING UP

Join left shoulder seam. Sew sleeves in place. Join sleeve and side seams.

SCARF (MAKE 2) Cast on 8 sts using 4mm needles and Yarn C. Work 6 rows in garter st. Change to Yarn B and work 2 rows in garter st. Change to Yarn A and work 6 rows in garter st. Change to Yarn B and work 2 rows in garter st. Continue following above pattern until piece measures 25cm. Cast off.

Attach cast on edges of scarf to the bear’s shoulders, right side facing up. Tie scarf loosely around bear’s neck.
