Textured stitches, deep pockets and a winter-friendly yarn – this jacket is just made for adventurou­s days out! A 12-row repeat of rib and garter stitch make up this rugged basketweav­e pattern.

BACK

Cast on 92 ( 100: 108: 116: 124) sts using 5mm needles. Row 1 (RS) K3, (P2, K2) to last st, K1. Row 2 K1, (P2, K2) to last 3 sts, P2, K1. Rep the last 2 rows twice more, then row 1 again inc 3 ( 5: 7: 9: 11) sts evenly across last row. [95 ( 105: 115: 125: 135) sts]

Purl 1 row.

Change to 6mm needles and patt: Row 1 (RS) P1, (K1, P1) twice, *K5, P1, (K1, P1) twice; rep from * to end. Row 2 (K1, P1) twice, *K7, P1, K1, P1; rep from * to last st, K1. Rows 3- 6 Rep Rows 1 and 2 twice. Row 7 K5, *P1, (K1, P1) twice, K5; rep from * to end. Row 8 K6, *P1, K1, P1, K7; rep from * to last 9 sts, P1, K1, P1, K6. Rows 9-12 Rep Rows 7 and 8 twice. These 12 rows form patt. Cont in patt until back measures 66 ( 67: 67: 69: 69) cm from beg, measured through centre of work and ending after a WS row. SHAPE SHOULDERS Cast off 9( 10: 11: 12: 13) sts at beg of next 6 rows, then 8 ( 10: 11: 12: 14) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Slip rem 25 ( 25: 27: 29: 29) sts on a spare needle.

POCKET LININGS

(MAKE 2) Cast on 23 sts using 6mm needles. Beginning with a knit row work 26 rows in st st, inc 2 sts evenly on last row. [25 sts] Break yarn and slip sts on a stitch holder and leave.

RIGHT FRONT

Cast on 44 ( 48: 48: 56: 60) sts using 5mm needles. Work 7 rows in rib as on Back but inc 1 ( 2: 7: 4: 5) sts evenly on last row. [45 ( 50: 55: 60: 65) sts] Purl 1 row. ** Change to 6mm needles and place patt for various sizes:

SIZES S, L AND XXL ONLY Work Rows 1 and 2 as on Back.

SIZES M AND XL SIZES ONLY Row 1 *K5, P1, (K1, P1) twice; rep from * to end. Row 2 (K1, P1) twice, *K7, P1, K1, P1; rep from * to last 6 sts, K6. Rows 3- 6 Rep Rows 1 and 2 twice. Row 7 *P1, (K1, P1) twice, K5; rep from * to end. Row 8 *(K1, P1) twice, K6; rep from * to end. Rows 9-12 Rep Rows 7 and 8 twice. These 12 rows form patt. ALL SIZES Work 34 more rows in patt.

PLACE POCKET LINING

Next row Patt 10 ( 10: 10: 15: 15), *slip next 25 sts onto a length of yarn, and in place of these patt across a group of lining sts from holder to end.

*** Cont in patt on all sts until Front measures 12 ( 14: 14: 16: 16) rows less than Back to shoulder shaping, ending at front edge.

SHAPE NECK

Cast off 7( 7: 8: 9: 9) sts at beg of next row. [38 ( 43: 47: 51: 56) sts] Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 3 rows. [35 ( 40: 44: 48: 53) sts] Cont straight until Front measures same as Back to shoulder shaping, ending at side edge.

SHAPE SHOULDER

Cast off 9( 10: 11: 12: 13) sts at beg of next row, then on the 2 foll alt rows. [8 ( 10: 11: 12: 14) sts] Work 1 row straight. Cast off rem 8 ( 10: 11: 12: 14) sts.

LEFT FRONT

Work as Right Front to **.

Change to 6mm needles and place patt for various sizes:

SIZES S, L AND XXL ONLY Work Rows 1 and 2 as on Back. SIZES M AND XL SIZES ONLY Row 1 *P1, (K1, P1) twice, K5; rep from * to end. Row 2 *(K1, P1) twice, K6; rep from * to end. Rows 3- 6 Rep Rows 1 and 2 twice. Row 7 *K5, P1, (K1, P1) twice; rep from * to end. Row 8 (K1, P1) twice, *K7, P1, K1, P1; rep from * to last 6 sts, K6. Rows 9-12 Rep Rows 7 and 8 twice. PLACE POCKET LINING

Next row Patt 10 ( 15: 20: 20: 25), work as right pocket row from * to end.

SHAPE NECK AND SHOULDER

Work 1 row straight. Complete as Right Front working from *** to end, omitting final row before cast- off.

SLEEVES

Cast on 36 ( 36: 36: 40: 40) sts using 5mm needles. Work 7 rows in rib as on Back. Next row P2 ( 2: 2: 6: 6), *M1, P4 ( 4: 4: 2: 2); rep from * to last 2 ( 2: 2: 6: 6) sts, M1, purl to end. [45 ( 45: 45: 55: 55) sts] Change to 6mm needles and work 6 rows in patt as on Back. Cont in patt as set for Back, AT THE SAME TIME shaping Sleeve by inc 1 st at each end of next row, then on every foll 6th ( 4th: 4th: 4th: 4th) row until there are 67 ( 61: 75: 73: 83) sts, then on every foll 8th ( 6th: 6th: 6th: 6th) row until there are 73 ( 79: 85: 91: 95) sts, taking extra sts into patt. Cont straight until Sleeve measures 46 ( 46: 47: 47: 48) cm from beg, ending after an RS row. Cast off loosely knitwise.

POCKET TOPS

Slip a group of pocket sts onto a 5mm needle and rejoin yarn. Row 1 (RS) Knit, inc 3 sts evenly across. [28 sts] Beg with Row 2, work 4 rows in rib as on Back. Cast off loosely in rib.

NECKBAND

Join shoulder seams. Using 5mm needles with RS facing, pick up and knit 18 ( 20: 25: 28: 28) sts evenly around Right Front neck, knit across Back neck sts, finally pick up and knit 17 ( 19: 24: 27: 27) sts evenly around Left Front neck. [60 ( 64: 76: 84: 84) sts] Beg row 2 work 19 rows in rib as for Back. Cast off in rib, working firmly on L, XL and XXL sizes.

FRONT BORDERS

Cast on 11 sts using 5mm needles. Row 1 (RS) K2, (P1, K1) 4 times, K1. Row 2 K1, (P1, K1) 5 times. Rep these 2 rows until border, when slightly stretched, fits up right front edge, ending after Row 2. Cast off in rib. Mark position on border for 7 buttonhole­s, first to be in 5th/6th rows from lower edge, last one to be in 5th/6th rows from cast- on edge and remaining 5 spaced evenly between. Work second border as first but working holes to match markers thus: Row 1 Rib 3, cast off 4 sts, rib to end. Row 2 In rib, cast on 4 sts where sts were cast off.

TO MAKE UP

Do not press. Sew down Pocket Linings on WS and tops on RS. Sew cast- off edge of Sleeves to side edges of Back and Fronts allowing approx 59 ( 62: 66: 69: 73) rows for armhole. Join side and Sleeve seams. Fold Neckband in half to WS and stitch in place. Sew on borders. Sew on buttons. Press seams on WS.
