Chunky cable jumper

Cast on this über cool, super-soft knit for Thoroughly Modern Millies.

Dive into this delightful knit and experience a smörgåsbor­d of techniques. Lucky knitters will get to try reverse stocking stitch, cable and 2x2 rib. Add to that a squishy roll neck and three- quarter length sleeves (all knitted in quick chunky yarn) and you’ll feel 100% spoilt!

BACK

Cast on 82 ( 82: 82: 86: 86: 86) sts using 6mm needles. Row 1 K2, *P2, K2; rep from * to end. Row 2 *P2, K2; rep from * to last 2 stitches, P2. Rep last 2 rows until work measures 8cm, ending with a WS row. Change to 6 mm needles. Starting with a purl row, work in reverse stocking stitch until work measures 41 ( 41: 42: 42: 44: 44) cm, ending with a WS row. Cast on 32 ( 32: 34: 34: 36: 36) sts at beginning of next 2 rows. [146 ( 146: 150: 154: 158: 158) sts] Continue in rev st st until work measures 66 ( 66: 67: 67: 68: 68) cm, ending with a WS row. Next row (RS) P55 ( 55: 57: 58: 60: 60) sts, turn. Next row K to end. Cast off. Slip centre 36 ( 36: 36: 38: 38: 38) sts onto a stitch holder, re-join yarn and work other side to match.

FRONT

Cast on 82 ( 82: 82: 86: 86: 86) sts using 6mm needles. Work in rib as set for Back, working 1 row less. Next row ( WS) Rib 6 ( 6: 6: 8: 8: 8) sts, inc in each of next 4 sts, rib 8 sts, inc in each of next 4 sts, rib 14 sts, inc in each of next 9 sts, rib 13 sts, inc in each of next 4 sts, rib 10 sts, inc in each of next 4 sts, rib 6( 6: 6: 8: 8: 8) sts. [107 ( 107: 107: 111: 111: 111) sts] Change to 6 mm needles.

MAIN BODY

Row 2 K5 ( 5: 5: 7: 7: 7), P10, K6, P10, K6, P3, K6, P15, K6, P3, K6, P10, K6, P10, K5 ( 5: 5: 7: 7: 7). Row 3 P5 ( 5: 5: 7: 7: 7), C10F, P6, C10F, P6, K3, P6, K3, (C6F) twice, P6, K3, P6, C10B, P6, C10B, P5 ( 5: 5: 7: 7: 7). Row 4 As Row 2. Row 5 As Row 1. Row 6 As Row 2. Row 7 P5 ( 5: 5: 7: 7: 7), C10F, P6, C10F, P6, K3, P6, (C6B) twice, K3, P6, K3, P6, C10B, P6, C10B, P5 ( 5: 5: 7: 7: 7). Row 8 As Row 2.

Rep last 8 rows until work measures 41 ( 41: 42: 42: 44: 44) cm, ending with a WS row.

Cast on 32 ( 32: 34: 34: 36: 36) sts at beginning of next 2 rows. [171 ( 171: 175: 179: 183: 183) sts]

Continue straight, in pattern, until work measures 56 ( 56: 57: 57: 58: 58) cm ending with a WS row.

SHAPE NECK

Next row P74 ( 74: 76: 78: 80: 80) sts, turn and leave remaining stitches on a stitch holder. Next row ( WS) Patt2, patt2tog, patt to end. [73 ( 73: 75: 77: 79: 79) sts] Next row Patt to last 4 sts, patt2tog, patt last 2 sts. [72 ( 72: 74: 76: 78: 78) sts]

Rep last 2 rows until 55 ( 55: 57: 58: 60: 60) sts.

Continue straight until work measures same as Back, ending with a WS row.

Note If cable stitches are at their spread- out point, knit 2 stitches together, twice, during casting off, to bring cables in. Cast off.

Return to stitches left on stitch holder. With RS facing, leave centre 23 sts on stitch holder and slip the remaining sts back onto needle. Rejoin yarn and work other side to match, reversing shapings.

FINISHING

Block gently, following any instructio­ns on the ball band. Join right shoulder seam.

NECKBAND

Using 6mm needles, with RS facing and beginning at left shoulder pick up and knit 15 sts down left side of front neck, 23 sts from front neck stitch holder, 15 sts up right- hand side of front neck, pick up 2 sts down back right neck, 36 sts from back neck stitch holder, 3 sts up left back neck. [94 sts] Row 1 ( WS) K2, *P2, K2 rep from * to end. Row 2 *P2, K2; rep from * to last 2 sts, P2. Rep last 2 rows until neck measures 15cm ending with a WS row.

Cast off loosely in rib pattern. Join left shoulder seam and neckband.

CUFFS

Using 6mm needles pick up and knit 82 sts evenly along Sleeve edge.

Work in rib pattern as set for Neckband for 6 rows.

Cast off loosely in rib pattern.

Join side and sleeve seams.
