Rainbow hooded scarf

With minimal shaping, this funky scarf is all about cable, rib and colour changes! By Monica Russel.

When the wind is whistling there’s nothing more satisfying than sending your kids to school snuggly warm. This hooded scarf in a chunky yarn entertains eager knitters with cable and alternatin­g rib, whilst satisfying the impatient by knitting up speedily on 7mm needles. Pick up the hood from the finished scarf to make your colourful all-in- one accessory.

ALTERNATIN­G RIB PATTERN

Row 1 (RS) *P2, K2; rep from * to last 2 sts, P2. Rows 2- 6 K the knit sts and P the purl sts. Row 7 *K2, P2; rep from * to last 2 sts, K2. Rows 8-12 As Row 2. Rows 1-12 set pattern.

SCARF

Cast on 30 sts using 7mm needles. Row 1 (RS) K2, P2, *K4, P2; rep from * to last 2 sts, K2. Row 2 ( WS) K4, *P4, K2; rep from * to last 2 sts, K2.

Row 3 K2, P2, *C4B, P2; rep from * to last 2 sts, K2.

Row 4 K4, *P4, K2; rep from * to last 2 sts, K2. Cont working 4-row pattern until scarf measures approx 170cm. Cast off.

HOOD

Fold Scarf in half to find centre back. Place a marker 25.5cm from centre back on each side to mark the centre 51cm. From RS, pick up and knit 50 sts evenly spaced between markers.

Knit 1 WS row.

Row 1 (RS) K6 for border, beg with Row 1 work in Alternatin­g Rib Pattern to last 6 sts, K6 for border. Rows 2-20 K6, work next row of Alternatin­g Rib Pattern to last 6 sts, K6 (end with Row 8 of Alternatin­g Rib Pattern). Row 21 (Dec row) K6, (K2, P2) 4 times, P1, p2tog, p2tog, K1, (P2, K2) 4 times, K6. [48 sts] Row 22 and all WS rows As Row 2. Row 23 (Dec row) K6, (K2, P2) 4 times, p2tog, p2tog, (P2, K2) 4 times, K6. [46 sts] Row 25 (Dec row) K6, (P2, K2) 3 times, P2, K1, k2tog, ssk, K1, P2, (K2, P2) 3 times, K6. [44 sts] Row 27 (Dec row) K6, (P2, K2) 3 times, P2, k2tog, ssk, P2, (K2, P2) 3 times, K6. [42 sts] Row 29 (Dec row) K6, (P2, K2) 3 times, P1, p2tog, p2tog, P1, (K2, P2) 3 times, K6. [40 sts] Row 30 As Row 2. Cast off.

TO MAKE UP

Fold hood in half and sew top edges together.

POCKETS
