The great thing about hand-knitted socks is that they’re made to last – so having a classic pair that will never go out of fashion makes perfect sense! This design, with its traditiona­l cables running the length of the foot, will soon be a firm favourite.

CABLE PATTERN

(OVER 60 STS) Rounds 1– 6 P1, (K8, P2) twice, K8, P3, K4, P3, K4, P2. Round 7 P1, (C8F, P2) twice, C8F, P3, C4F, P3, C4F, P2.

CUFF

Cast on 60 sts using 4mm DPNs, join into the round being careful not to twist the sts. PM to mark beg of round. Round 1 K1, P2, (K2, P2) to last st, K1. Repeat this round 10 more times. Now work Rounds 1-7 of Cable Pattern 6 times then repeat Rounds 1– 6 once more.

HEEL FLAP

Work back and forth on first 30 sts of Needle 1. Row 1 (RS) (Sl1, K1) to last 2 sts, sl1, P1, turn. Row 2 ( WS) Sl1, (P1, K1) to last st, P1, turn. Repeat Rounds 1 and 2, 8 more times for a total of 18 rows.

TURN HEEL

Row 1 K15, ssk, K1, turn. Row 2 Sl1 purlwise, P1, p2tog, P1, turn. Row 3 Sl1 knitwise, K2, ssk, K1, turn. Row 4 Sl1 purlwise, P3, p2tog, P1, turn. Row 5 Sl1 knitwise, K4, ssk, K1, turn. Row 6 Sl1 purlwise, P5, p2tog, P1, turn. Row 7 Sl1 knitwise, K6, ssk, K1, turn. Row 8 Sl1 purlwise, P7, p2tog, P1, turn. Row 9 Sl1 knitwise, K8, ssk, K1, turn. Row 10 Sl1 purlwise, P9, p2tog, P1, turn. Row 11 Sl1 knitwise, K10, ssk, K1, turn. Row 12 Sl1 purlwise, P11, p2tog, P1, turn. Row 13 Sl1 knitwise, K12, ssk, K1, turn. Row 14 Sl1 purlwise, P13, p2tog, P1, turn. Row 15 Sl1 knitwise, K15. [16 sts]

PICK UP INSTEP

With RS facing, pick up and knit 10 sts down side of Heel Flap, PM, work in Cable Pattern across instep sts, PM, pick up and knit 10 sts on the other side of the Heel Flap, K8 sole sts. PM to mark new beg of round.

DECREASE FOR GUSSET

Round 1 K to sm, K2tog, sl sm, work Cable Pattern as set across instep sts, sl sm, SSK, knit to end. Round 2 Knit. Repeat these 2 rounds until 60 sts remain. Work straight until foot measures 18cm from heel (follow Cable Pattern on instep and st st on sole) or approx 5cm less than the length of your foot.

SHAPE TOE

Dec round K to SM (round now begins here), *sl sm, K1, ssk, knit to 3 sts before sm, k2tog, K1; rep from * once more. [4 sts dec’d] Repeat this round until 4 sts remain. Break the yarn; leave a 30cm tail and thread through the remaining sts using a sewing- up needle. Pull firmly. Thread the yarn through the top of the toe and weave in the loose ends. Repeat instructio­ns for the second sock.
