Simple lace poncho
Start the week casting on this fun-filled poncho by Caroline Birkett and discover the joy of chunky lace.
We’re always looking for ways to improve your knitting world, which is why we were so excited about this particular poncho. If you’re ready to start your lace journey, this chunky knit makes for a fun but straightforward start, especially if you’ve already got shaping under your belt! Note Chart A is worked back and forth to make a vent in each side, then joined and continued in the round for the remainder of the pattern. You will need to wind off small amounts of Yarn A to work the intarsia method for the vents.
PONCHO HEM
Cast on 89 ( 105: 121) sts using a 7mm circular needle, Yarn A and the thumb cast on. Do not join into the round.
Work 5 rows garter st.
Change to Yarn B for the main body of the Poncho, with 2 sts g st at either edge worked in Yarn A. Use intarsia method with 2 different balls of Yarn A, twisting the yarns together at the colour changes.
SECTION 1( MAKE 2)
Set- up row ( WS) In Yarn A K2, in Yarn B, P to last 4 sts, in Yarn A K2.
Begin working Chart A:
Row 1 In Yarn A K2, in Yarn B work Row 1 of Chart A to last 2 sts, in Yarn A K2.
Continue in patt as set, working 2 sts in garter stitch in Yarn A at each end and lace patt in Yarn B.
Work Rows 1-12, 2 times, then Rows 13-16 once more. [28 rows in total] Place sts on a holder or onto waste yarn and make one more piece the same.
SECTION 2
Using Yarn B and with RS facing, join the two pieces together to work in the round as follows:
Round 1 K88 ( 104: 120), k2tog, K87 ( 103: 119), K last st of round together with first stitch of round. [176 ( 208: 240) sts]
Work 8 rounds in st st.
Next round *K9 ( 11: 13), k2tog; rep from * to end. [160 ( 192: 224) sts]

Work 16 rounds from Chart B.
SECTION 4
Round 1 *K8 ( 10: 12), k2tog; rep from * to end. [144 ( 176: 208) sts]
Round 2 and 3 Knit.
Round 4 *K7 ( 9: 11), k2tog; rep from * to end. [128 ( 160: 192) sts]
Round 5 and 6 Knit.
Round 7 *K6 ( 8: 10), k2tog; rep from * to end. [112 ( 144: 176) sts]
Round 8 and 9 Knit.
Round 10 *K5 ( 7: 9), k2tog; rep from * to end. [96 ( 128: 160) sts]
Round 11 and 12 Knit.
Round 13 *K4 ( 6: 8), k2tog; rep from * to end. [80 ( 112: 144) sts]
Round 14 Knit.
