TENSION

Yarn used knits as DK to this tension: 25 sts and 34 rows to measure 10x10cm (4x4in) over patt using 4mm needles

SWEATER BACK

Cast on 58 ( 66: 74: 82) sts using 3 mm needles.

Row 1 (RS) Knit.

Row 2 K2, *P2, K2; rep from * to end. Rows 3 and 4 As Rows 1 and 2.

Change to 4mm needles.

Row 5 K1, *C2B, C2F; rep from * to last st, K1.

Row 6 P2, *K2, P2; rep from * to end. Row 7 Knit.

Rows 8 and 9 As Rows 6 and 7.

Row 10 P2, *K2, P2; rep from * to end. Row 11 K1, *C2F, C2B; rep from * to last st, K1.

Row 12 As Row 2.

These 12 rows form patt.

Using 4mm needles throughout, cont in patt until Back meas 10 ( 13: 16: 19) cm, ending with RS facing for next row. Place markers at both ends of last row to denote base of armholes.**

Cont straight until work meas 6 ( 7: 8: 9) cm from markers, ending with RS facing for next row.

DIVIDE FOR BACK OPENING

Next row (RS) Patt 29 ( 33: 37: 41) sts, turn and work this side first.

Cont straight until work meas 5cm from dividing row, ending with RS facing for next row.

SHAPE SHOULDER

Cast off 6( 7: 8: 9) sts at beg of next and foll alt row, then 5 ( 6: 7: 8) sts at beg of

foll alt row.

Work 1 row, ending with RS facing for next row.

Break yarn and leave rem 12 ( 13: 14: 15) sts on a holder.

With RS facing, rejoin yarn to rem sts, patt to end.

Cont straight until work meas 5cm from dividing row, ending with WS facing for next row.

SHAPE SHOULDER

Cast off 6( 7: 8: 9) sts at beg of next and foll alt row, then 5 ( 6: 7: 8) sts at beg of foll alt row, ending with RS facing for next row.

Break yarn and leave rem 12 ( 13: 14: 15) sts on a holder.

FRONT

Work as for Back to **.

Cont straight until 14 ( 14: 16: 16) rows less have been worked than on Back to start of shoulder shaping, ending with RS facing for next row.

SHAPE NECK

Next row (RS) Patt 24 ( 27: 31: 34) sts, turn and work this side first. Keeping patt correct, dec 1 st at neck edge of next 4 rows, then on foll 3 ( 3: 4: 4) alt rows. [17 ( 20: 23: 26) sts]

Work 3 rows, ending with RS facing for next row.

SHAPE SHOULDER

Cast off 6( 7: 8: 9) sts at beg of next and foll alt row.

Work 1 row.

Cast off rem 5 ( 6: 7: 8) sts.

With RS facing, slip centre 10 ( 12: 12: 14) sts onto a holder, rejoin yarn to rem sts, patt to end. Complete to match first side, reversing shapings, working an extra row before start of shoulder shaping.

SLEEVES

Cast on 30 ( 34: 34: 38) sts using 3 mm needles.

Work in patt as for Back for 4 rows, ending with RS facing for next row. Change to 4mm needles.

Cont in patt, shaping sides by inc 1 st at each end of next ( next: next: 3rd) and every foll alt ( alt: alt: 4th) row to 48 ( 42: 40: 52) sts, then on every foll 4th ( 4th: 4th: 6th) row until there are 54 ( 58: 62: 66) sts, taking inc sts into patt.

Cont straight until Sleeve meas 13 ( 16: 20: 26) cm, ending with RS facing for next row. Cast off.

TO MAKE UP

Press carefully following instructio­ns on ball band. Join shoulder seams.

NECK BORDER

With RS facing and using 3 mm needles, K12 ( 13: 14: 15) sts on left back holder, pick up and knit 14 ( 14: 16: 16) sts down left side of neck, K10 ( 12: 12: 14) sts on front holder, pick up and knit 14 ( 14: 16: 16) sts up right side of neck, then K12 ( 13: 14: 15) sts on right back holder.

[62 ( 66: 72: 76) sts] Work in g st for 2 rows, ending with WS facing for next row.

Cast off knitwise (on WS).

BACK OPENING BORDER

With RS facing and using 3 mm needles, starting and ending at top of

Neck Border, pick up and knit 13 sts down right side of back opening, then 13 sts up left side of back opening. [26 sts]

Row 1 ( WS), K11, (k2tog) twice, K11

[24 sts]

Row 2 K1, k2tog, yo, K7, (k2tog) twice, K10.

Cast off rem 22 sts knitwise (on WS). Sew Sleeves to Back and Front between markers. Join side and Sleeve seams. Sew on button.

JACKET BACK

Work as for Back of Sweater to **. Cont straight until work meas 11 ( 12: 13: 15) cm from markers, ending with RS facing for next row.

SHAPE SHOULDERS

Cast off 6( 7: 8: 9) sts at beg of next 4 rows, then 5 ( 6: 7: 8) sts at beg of foll 2 rows.

Break yarn and leave rem 21 ( 26: 28: 30) sts on a holder.

LEFT FRONT

Cast on 30 ( 34: 38: 42) sts with 3 mm needles.

Work in patt as for Back for 4 rows. Change to 4mm needles.

Cont in patt until Left Front meas 10 ( 13: 16: 19) cm, ending with RS facing for next row.

Place markers at end of last row to denote base of armhole.

Cont straight until 15 ( 15: 17: 17) rows less have been worked than on Back to start of shoulder shaping, ending with WS facing for next row.

SHAPE NECK

Keeping patt correct, cast off 5( 6: 6: 7) sts at beg of next row. [25 ( 28: 32: 35) sts] Dec 1 st at neck edge of next 5 rows, then on foll 3 ( 3: 4: 4) alt rows.

[17 ( 20: 23: 26) sts]

Work 7 ( 7: 8: 8) rows, ending with RS facing for next row.

Cast off 6( 7: 8: 9) sts at beg of next and foll alt row. Work 1 row.

Cast off rem 5 ( 6: 7: 8) sts.

RIGHT FRONT

Work to match Left Front, reversing shapings, working an extra row before start of neck and shoulder shaping.

SLEEVES

Work as for Sleeves of Sweater.

MAKE UP

Press, carefully following instructio­ns on ball band.

Join shoulder seams.

NECK BORDER

With RS facing and using 3 mm needles, starting and ending at front opening edges, pick up and knit 20 ( 21: 23: 24) sts up right side of neck, K 21 ( 26: 28: 30) sts on back holder, then pick up and knit 20 ( 21: 23: 24) sts down left side of neck. [61 ( 68: 74: 78) sts]

Work in g st for 2 rows, ending with WS facing for next row.

BUTTON BORDER

With RS facing and using 3 mm needles, pick up and knit 40 ( 48: 56: 65) sts evenly along one front opening edge (left front for a girl, or right front for a boy), between top of Neck Border and cast- on edge. Work in garter st for 2 rows, ending with WS facing for next row. Cast off knitwise (on WS).

BUTTONHOLE BORDER

With RS facing and using 3 mm needles, pick up and knit 40 ( 48: 56: 65) sts evenly along other front opening edge, between top of Neck Border and cast- on edge. Row 1 ( WS) Knit.

FOR A GIRL

Row 2 K18 ( 22: 26: 31), *yo, k2tog (to make a buttonhole), K7 ( 9: 11: 13); rep from * once more, yo, k2tog (to make 3rd buttonhole), K2.

FOR A BOY

Row 2 K2, *k2tog, yo (to make a buttonhole), K7 ( 9: 11: 13); rep from * once more, k2tog, yo (to make 3rd buttonhole), K18 ( 22: 26: 31).

FOR A GIRL OR BOY

Cast off knitwise (on WS).

Sew Sleeves to Back and Fronts between markers. Join side and sleeve seams. Sew on buttons.
