Love experiment­ing with new stitch patterns but would rather learn the technique without shaping? Then cast on these wonderfull­y textured placemats and coasters by Ann Franklin. Worked as neat rectangles in stitch-defining Cotton Aran, they knit up quickly, showing off their wonderful stitches at the same time.

RIPPLE RIB STITCH SET

Note While a right side has been indicated in the pattern, this stitch pattern is completely reversible.

COASTER

Cast on 20 sts using 5mm needles and Yarn A.

Row 1 (RS) *P2, K2; rep from * to the end of the row.

Row 2 *P2, K2; rep from * to the end of the row.

Row 3 P1, *K2, P2; rep from * to the last 3 sts, K2, P1.

Row 4 K1, *P2, K2; rep from * to the last 3 sts, P2, K1.

Row 5 *K2, P2; rep from * to the end of the row.

Row 6 *K2, P2; rep from * to the end of the row.

Row 7 K1, *P2, K2; rep from * to the last 3 sts, P2, K1.

Row 8 P1, *K2, P2; rep from * to the last 3 sts, K2, P1.

Rows 9 and 10 *P2, K2; rep from * to the end of the row.

Row 11 K1, *P2, K2; rep from * to the last 3 sts, P2, K1.

Row 12 P1, *K2, P2; rep from * to the last 3 sts, K2, P1.

Rows 13 and 14 *K2, P2; rep from * to the end of the row.

Row 15 P1, *K2, P2; rep from * to the last 3 sts, K2, P1.

Row 16 K1, *P2, K2; rep from * to the last 3 sts, P2, K1.

These 16 rows form the pattern. Work a further 8 rows in pattern. Cast off in pattern.

PLACEMAT

Cast on 60 sts using 5mm needles and Yarn A.

Work 48 rows in pattern as set in Rows 1–16 of the coaster.

Cast off in pattern.

TO MAKE UP

Neaten all ends. Block gently to measuremen­ts, following any yarn care instructio­ns on the ball band.

KNOTTED OPENWORK STITCH SET

Note The stitch pattern tends to stretch/ contract with use.

COASTER

Cast on 18 sts using 5mm needles and Yarn B.

Row 1 (WS) K1, purl to the last st, K1. Row 2 K2, *yo, K3, pass the first of these 3 sts over the second and third sts; rep from * to the last st, K1.

Row 3 K1, purl to the last st, K1.

Row 4 K1, *K3, pass the first of these 3 sts over the second and third sts; yo; rep from * to the last 2 sts, K2.

These 4 rows form the pattern. Work a further 20 rows in pattern. Cast off.

PLACEMAT

Cast on 54 sts using 5mm needles and Yarn B.

Work 50 rows in the pattern as set for the coaster.

Cast off.

TO MAKE UP

Neaten all ends. Block gently to measuremen­ts, following any yarn care instructio­ns on the ball band.
