Work both pieces the same.
CENTRE
Cast on 8 sts using 7mm DPNs and the pinhole cast on as follows: Make a very loose half knot to create a circle with the yarn tail at the back and pointing to the left. Pinch the circle with your left hand and hold a DPN and working yarn in your right hand. *Insert DPN into circle from front to back and wrap the working yarn around the DPN. Use the needle tip to pull a loop through the circle from back to front (you should have 1 loop on the DPN). Wrap working yarn around needle point (2 loops on DPN). With a finger, second DPN or a crochet hook lift the first loop over second loop and off the needle [1 st made]. Rep from * another 7 times. Distribute sts across DPNs and pull yarn tail to tighten loop. PM to mark beg of round. Change to a circular needle when you have enough sts.
Round 1 (K1 tbl) 8 times.
Round 2 (Kfb) 8 times. [16 sts]
Round 3 Knit.
