Lace and cables combine in this soft knit, created in UK Alpaca yarn. Cast it on for the sunniest of summer days. By Jo Allport

LACE AND CABLE TOP

Note Make sure that each decrease within the pattern is matched by an increase. If there are insufficie­nt stitches to work the increase and decrease, work sts in st st. STITCH SINGLE Worked over RIB PATTERNS an even number of sts. Row Row 1 2 (RS) (WS) *K1, As Row P1; rep 1. from * to end. LACE Worked AND over 7 CABLE plus 6 sts. PATTERN

Row Row 1 2 (RS) Purl. K1, *K4, yo, s2kpo, yo; rep from * to last 5 sts, K5.

Row Row 3 4 K1, Purl. *C4F, yo, s2kpo, yo; rep from * to last 5 sts, C4F, K1. BACK Cast on 102 (110: 114: 122: 128: 134: 140: 146: 154: 158) sts using 3.5mm needles.

Work in Single Rib across all sts until Back measures 5cm, measured from cast-on edge, ending after a WS row.

Change to 4mm needles.

Next row (RS) Knit to end, inc 1 (0: 1: 0: 1: 0: 1: 0: 1: 1) st at end of row.

Next row Purl.

Beginning with a RS (knit) row, work in st st until Back measures 32 (32: 32: 32: 32: 32: 32: 33: 33: 33)cm from cast-on edge, ending after a WS row.

Placing markers at the beg of the next 2 rows to indicate the start of the Sleeve shaping, keeping st st correct, and using the knitted or cable cast on, cast on 7 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows. [117 (124: 129: 136: 143: 148: 155: 160: 169: 173) sts]

Work in Lace and Cable Pattern as follows:

Row 1 (RS) K3 (3: 2: 2: 2: 1: 1: 0: 1: 3), (work Lace and Cable Pattern Row 1 over 111 (118: 125: 132: 139: 146: 153: 160: 167: 167) sts), K3 (3: 2: 2: 2: 1: 1: 0: 1: 3).

Row 2 P3 (3: 2: 2: 2: 1: 1: 0: 1: 3), (work Lace and Cable Pattern Row 2 over 111 (118: 125: 132: 139: 146: 153: 160: 167: 167) sts), P3 (3: 2: 2: 2: 1: 1: 0: 1: 3).

These 2 rows set the position of the patterns; the edge 3 (3: 2: 2: 2: 1: 1: 0: 1: 3) sts at both sides worked in st st and the central 111 (118: 125: 132: 139: 146: 153: 160: 167: 167) sts worked in Lace and Cable Pattern. **

Put these onto a stitch holder. FRONT

Cont in patt as set until Front measures 46 (47: 48: 49: 49: 50: 51: 52: 53: 53)cm from cast-on edge, ending after a WS row. SHAPE LEFT FRONT NECK

Next row (RS) Patt 40 (43: 45: 48: 51: 53: 56: 57: 61: 62), turn and put the rem sts onto a holder. Continue on these 40 (43: 45: 48: 51: 53: 56: 57: 61: 62) sts only.

Next row (WS) P1, p2tog, purl to end. [1 st dec’d] Next row (RS) Patt to last 3 sts, k2tog, K1. [1 st dec’d] Rep these last 2 rows once more.

Work one row straight in patt as set.

Work straight in patt as set until Right Front measures the same as the Back to beg of shoulder shaping, ending after a RS row. SHAPE RIGHT FRONT SHOULDER

Block pieces lightly to smooth out work. NECK EDGING

Join left shoulder seam.

With 3.5mm needles, RS facing, and beg at Right Back, knit the 53 (54: 55: 56: 57: 58: 59: 62: 63: 65) sts from the Back stitch holder, pick up and knit 21 (21: 21: 21: 22: 22: 23: 23: 23: 23) sts down Left Front Neck, knit across 37 (38: 39: 40: 41: 42: 43: 46:

47: 49) sts from the Front stitch holder and pick up and knit 21 (21: 21: 21: 22: 22: 23: 23: 23: 23) sts up Right Front Neck.

Beginning with a WS row, work in Single Rib until neckband measures 12cm from picked-up edge, ending after a RS row. Cast off in rib on the WS.

Join right shoulder and neckband seam. SLEEVE EDGING

With 3.5mm needles, RS facing, and beg at the marker, pick up and knit 88 (92: 96: 100: 104: 110: 114: 114: 118: 118) sts between markers.

Beginning with a WS row, work in Single Rib until edging measures 4cm from pick-up edge, ending after a RS row.

Cast off in rib on the WS.

Repeat for second Sleeve edging.

Sew side and Sleeve edging seams.

Weave in ends.

Block gently to measuremen­ts, following any yarn care instructio­ns on the ball band.
