Circular needle size 8 mm (80 cm) if required

Tension:

11 sts and 14 rows to 10 cm, over stocking stitch on 8 mm needles or the size required to give the correct tension.

Check your tension – if less stitches use thinner needles, if more use thicker needles.

Left front

Using 8 mm needles and thumb method cast on 40 (44) sts.

1st row. *k1, p1, rep from * to last 2 sts, k2.

2nd row. *k1, p1, rep from * to end. 1st and 2nd rows set rib.

Cont in rib until work measures 12 cm ending with a WS row. Proceed as follows:

1st row. Knit to last 5 sts, (p1, k1) twice, k1.

2nd row. k1, (p1, k1) twice, purl to end.

These 2 rows set st-st (stocking stitch) with front border. Working in st-st with front border (throughout) work 48 rows inc 1 st at beg (side edge) in 7th and every foll 10th row to 45 (49) sts.

Work 2 rows more without shaping. Shape Neck

Next Row. Knit to last 7 sts, k2tog (neck edge), (p1, k1) twice, k1. 44 (48) sts.

Next Row. k1, (p1, k1) twice, p2tog, purl to end. 43 (47) sts.

Last 2 rows set neck shaping. Work 2 rows dec 1 st at neck edge as before in every row. 41 (45) sts. Work 22 rows dec 1 st at neck edge as before in next and every foll alt row. 30 (34) sts.

Cont without shaping until work measures 70 cm, ending with a WS row.

Shape shoulder

Next row. Cast off 25 (29) sts, patt to end. 5 sts.

Working on these 5 sts only for back neck border, proceed as follows:

Next row. k1, (p1, k1) twice, cast on 1 st (cast on st to be used for sewing border to back of neck). 6 sts.

Next row. k2, (p1, k1) twice. Last row sets rib.

Cont in rib until border measures 13,5 cm, when slightly stretched, ending with a WS row.

Cast off in rib.

Right front

Using 8 mm needles and thumb method cast on 40 (44) sts.

1st row. k2, *p1, k1, rep from * to end.

2nd row. *p1, k1, rep from * to end. 1st and 2nd rows set rib.

Cont in rib until work measures 12 cm ending with a WS row. Proceed as follows:

1st row. k1, (k1, p1) twice, knit to end.

2nd row. purl to last 5 sts, (k1, p1) twice, k1.

These 2 rows set st-st with front border.

Working in st-st with front border (throughout) work 48 rows inc 1 st at end (side edge) in 7th and every foll 10th row to 45 (49) sts. Work 2 rows more without shaping. Shape neck

Next row. k1, (k1, p1) twice, s1, k1, psso (neck edge), knit to end. 44 (48) sts.

Next row. purl to last 7 sts, p2togtbl, (k1, p1) twice, k1. 43 (47) sts.

Last 2 rows set neck shaping. Work 2 rows dec 1 st at neck edge as before in every row. 41 (45) sts. Work 22 rows dec 1 st at neck edge as before in next and every foll alt row. 30 (34) sts.

Cont without shaping until work measures 70 cm, ending with a RS row.

Shape shoulder

Next row. Cast off 25 (29) sts, patt to end. 5 sts.

Working on these 5 sts only for back neck border, proceed as follows:

Next row. k1, (k1, p1) twice, cast on 1 st (cast on st to be used for sewing border to back of neck). 6 sts.

Back

Please note: When sts become too numerous change to a circular needle if required.

1st row. * k1, p1, rep from * to last st, k1.

2nd row. p1, * k1, p1, rep from * to end.

These 2 rows set 1x1 rib.

Cont in 1x1 rib until work measures 12 cm, ending with a WS row, dec 1 st in centre of last row. 70 (78) sts. Proceed as follows:

1st row. Knit.

2nd row. Purl.

These 2 rows set st-st. Working in st-st (throughout) inc 1 st at each end of 7th and every foll 10th row to 80 (88) sts.

Cont without shaping until work measures same as left front, ending with a WS row.

Shape shoulders

Cast off 25 (29) sts at beg of next 2 rows. 30 sts.

Cast off rem 30 sts.

Sleeves (both alike)

Using 8 mm needles and thumb method cast on 23 sts. Work in 1x1 rib for 12 cm, ending with a WS row, inc 1 st in centre of last row. 24 sts. Working in st-st (throughout) inc 1 st at each end of 3rd and every foll alt row to 32 sts.

Inc 1 st at each end of every foll 4th row to 52 sts. Cont without shaping until work measures 52 cm, ending with a WS row. Cast off.

Finishing

Join shoulder seams. Place coloured markers 24 cm, down from shoulder seam on back and fronts. Fold sleeves in half lengthways, then placing folds to shoulder seams, sew sleeves in position between markers. Join side and sleeve seams. Join ends of back borders together, placing seam to centre back neck, sew evenly in position. Block out garment to the measuremen­t given and place under damp cloths and leave until dry.
